This place is a hidden gem! We didn't get a chance to see everything but there's always next time! The kids loved being there, between the hiking and all the sights! Plus the aviary was an unexpected stop but so worth checking out! Also, the park is very well taken care of and the bathrooms are clean! We will continue to visit! Playground: Not all parks have a play ground, one of the reasons we chose Big hill pond, the kids had so much fun!
Gorgeous! A beautiful drive out from Somerville. A nice cruise through the trees as we made our way to the hiking area. Very well laid out trails, evidently marked and cleared. There is some rough terrain, as to be expected. Once you make it to the watch tower, it's worth the climb! We didn't get to go on the boardwalk through the Dismal Swamp because it was closed due to storm damage. When I asked about potential repair timeliness, they said hioefby Memorial Day, weather dependent. Super helpful staff and rangers, too.
I'm a backpacker. I may get to do 3 good trips a year, if I'mlucky. That's really all time and money will afford. To scratch my backpacking itching between trips, I overnight at Big Hill Pond. I nice hike in to grassy point for the slow, relaxing evening. Come morning, hike on around McNatt Lake and up to the tower. It's a treat to hike to the tower for sunrise. Maybe a sip or two of coffee to get you heading back home. BHP is a little gem.
My husband and I went on the BEST excursion ever! And it was only $20! Bill Hill Pond State Park held a Stargazing Float event on the pond and it was absolutely WONDERFUL and SO incredibly beautiful!!! We truly enjoyed it beyond words and need to do it again ASAP! I wish they would do it every month at the pond! Every WEEK, really! I can't say enough about it and would recommend ANY of their kayaking events, because their employees are so sweet, helpful and professional! It was definitely a great first impression for our first time ever at the park! The ONLY thing I'd recommend for next time is to provide signs directing people to the pond, because we went to the wrong body of water within the park and had to drive pretty far to find the pond, so we got there quite late, but they waited for us! Other than that it was truly a PERFECT experience and we can't wait to do it again!
The activities available here are countless. From Kayak rentals to Disc Golf this park has everything! After a quick stop at the welcome center, viewing the small aviary and using the amenities at the campground. I made the hike to the Observation Tower and up it. There wasn't a dull moment the entire time. The view from the top is amazing. I might have spotted one piece of trash the whole hike. The bathrooms at the campground were definitely public outdoor restrooms but also very well kept. I will definitely be looking forward to another trip here for a longer duration.
Love it here! There is a down bridge on the 8 mile loop though so just plan for that until it's fixed!
Nice place close to home. Dogs enjoyed the hike and the lake as much as we did!
Enjoyable weekend getaway , even snuck in leaving early Monday morning to go back home due the short drive . Colors are just about to peak .. would get 5 stars had the Boy Scouts been using o e of the 3 Boy Scout Camps and not the campground .. all the staff were super nice ..
This state park ia one of the best parks I ever been too, the trails are so awesome. It just peaceful, beautiful and just a great way to spend your day. I can't wait to go back. The gift shop as well was small, but so cute. The woman that was in there was extremely sweet. Playground: Small playground but still fun for the kids and clean. Picnic area: Plenty of places to have a picnic
Big Hill Pond is a very quiet park. We almost had it all to ourselves . We stopped at the visitors center since it was our first time there. The park ranger was super nice. There are a lot of hiking trails. We hiked the Dismal Swamp Boardwalk and it was beautiful. We made our way to the lookout tower. It was 81 steps to the top of the tower. The view was amazing from all directions. We made our way across the levee of Travis McNatt Lake. The fishing looked excellant on the lake. The campground was empty. It is primitive camping but you could park smaller campers there. Very nice campground but there are no hook ups. The sites were shaded very well. There is no swimming anywhere on this state park.
