Words - so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne
The TAMIU Writing Center, located in Dr. Billy F. Cowart Hall 203, supports faculty's instructional goals by providing free individual and small-group tutoring sessions, peer review sessions, and writing workshops to TAMIU students.
The Writing Center seeks to develop more confident and competent writers. To do so, our consultants provide guidance in developing, revising, and editing students’ papers. They listen and respond to students’ works in progress, ask questions, and point out particular areas to focus on for improvement.
Since the goal of tutoring is to develop increasingly independent writers, consultants will not correct errors or rewrite students’ work; instead, during the course of a tutoring session, they will focus on one or two types of improvement strategies students may employ to produce effectively written work.
