I went here a year ago. The doctor helped me check out my eye and prescribed me medicine. He was very polite and genuinely concerned with me. I’m not sure what I’d do without him today. The ten minutes I had for him averted a catastrophe that had been on my mind for weeks!
Needed a temporary disability parking pass. Was told if I ended up in a wheel chair I'd "still need to walk up the hills" and "nothing we can do about that"
Never ever go here unless you want to waste your time and money. Saw a RN Practitioner yesterday and she was very rude towards me telling me that all of my symptoms were too much for the student health center to treat and that I needed to go to the ER. So I’m now being charged $30 for the nurse to tell me she can’t treat me. All I ended up having was strep which is easy to test.
Personally, I had only good experiences here. I saw Dr.Doss for my mental health and she was phenomenal, immensely caring and compassionate. She spoke to me with respect and she helped me overcome a lot. HOWEVER, I know that my experience was somewhat rare. My boyfriend has made several appointments for when he was sick and the nurses/doctors he met with were condescending and at times, rude. After reading multiple other reviews, it seems like that is not uncommon. That being said, it is super easy to make an appointment and reception/pharmacy is always very friendly.
I am a current TXST student and recently was accepted into a program that required immunizations and a physical. The forms were quite extensive and required multiple visits, each visit to the health center I was cared for excellently! Jessica RN and Dr. Doss were who I interacted with the most and both were fantastic. I felt they went above and beyond to get me what I needed and that really stood out to me. They made everything so easy!!!
I went without insurance for years and thank goodness that the health center exists. The cost of treatment is very reasonable. Several times I've needed to be seen ASAP and they've fit me in either that day or the next morning. All of the medical staff I've encountered is extremely nice and empathetic. Even though they do not take my current insurance, I still get a reoccurring prescription filled there because the pharmacy is so affordable.
I always love the ease of making an appointment. I check in and usually get seen pretty fast one I arrive. I love the nurse who helps my doctor. They both always make me feel really comfortable, especially since I get really nervous when I go see any doctor. Diane Johnston is the doctor I see and her nurse is Carmen Patterson. They are both really great!
This place gave me the worst experience I had ever had with a doctor. The nurse wasn’t very kind and didn’t seem interested in helping me. I hoped the doctor checking me out would be different but it wasn’t. I told her my symptoms and all she did was tell me to keep taking the same medicine I had already been taking. Then she tried to rush me out of there until I asked her to stop and help me with an issue I addressed at the beginning of the appointment. She told me it was just allergies and to get a better pillowcase. I tried her recommendations even though I thought they were very unhelpful, and I still have the same symptoms 3 weeks later and a bill of over $100. If I could give this 0 stars, I would.
I was seen here in the summer and the diagnosis was quick - especially since it was my first time. I received an in-house strep test and was prescribed antibiotics. My nurse practitioner was very caring and even gave me apple sauce to soothe my sore throat. I used the portal to let my provider know I thought I was allergic to the antibiotics because I had hives. She was able to reassured me the hives were stress related and was able to switch the antibiotics anyways. I had a high deductible on my insurance, so I paid a lot that day. I no longer have insurance and have paid their cheap cash prices since.
This is long overdue, but after my appointment yesterday, I have to do this. My boyfriend and I have both had several appointments for various reasons. For his sickness, the doctor asked him what meds he wanted and how much... She pulled up a tablet and used freakin Google to diagnose him. He selected his illness and medication. Later, he had a series of injuries and saw the "PT" on site. The PT improperly treated all 3 injuries he had and caused lasting damage. I went for birth control and they gave me one without asking me questions, and it was later discovered to be highly hormonal and my body was reacting negatively to it. She didn't care and told me to "go to another doctor, then". The nurses I have had are HORRIBLE with the exception of one lady who gave me my flu shot. They hate their jobs and make it very clear. Yesterday, I went for stomach pains and the doctor asked me what I think I had....then told me "well I guess keep taking what you're taking if you want to" which was Zantac for reasons I believed were unrelated to my stomach aches. He was nice to me but he clearly struggles with diagnosing people. I literally diagnosed myself and paid for him to be in the room with me. He asked me questions but didn't listen for the answers the nurse did too, so I kept repeating myself. He did offer blood work but I already did most of it recently and it came back normal. You never get an actual diagnosis and being here feels so much sketchier than an actual doctor's office. They all determine treatment based on the patient's self-diagnosis. It's nice to have a place on campus for uninsured students, but the quality of care is so bad. I really hate coming and only go if I am really not well. If you can find any alternative in San Marcos or even Austin area, I highly recommend going. I was blessed with the world's greatest doctor growing up, so I certainly expect at least some level of competency from my doctors. The doctors at student health are like 1st year med students given their low capacity for treatment and inability to connect with the patient because they are relying on notes and Google.
