The Chequit

Description

The Chequit returns to its glory days of being the centerpiece of the Heights on Shelter Island.

An extensive renovation in 2015 consisted of 31 brand new guestrooms each appointed with luxurious amenities like new bathrooms, restored hardwood floors, custom mattresses topped with luxury bedding. The design harks back to the golden age of vacationing on Shelter Island at the turn of the last century interpreted in a modern fresh way. For an alternate experience guests can choose Summer House at The Chequit, our quaint 6-room cottage that has been lovingly restored and offers seasonal accommodations in a historic setting at a great value.

Public areas include a breathtaking new lobby space that is the site of the inn’s signature rustic breakfast offering each morning. The space transforms in the early evening to a guest only wine and champagne lounge that also spills out onto the lushly appointed porches surrounding the lobby.

Also on property is the seasonal White Hill Café on the main level featuring Jack's Stir Brew Coffee and delicious baked goods and sandwiches. Our retail store Salt Supply offers up unique wares for the home, beach and gifts many of which are made by independent artisans.

On the lower level of the hotel is Red Maple, serving seasonal rustic American menus of local fare perfect for casual dining either in a our spacious dining room or under the name sake maple tree in season on the terrace.

Decent Japanese food, but nothing to write home about. More expensive than similar quality places in NYC. The beauty of it is that it’s on Shelter Island, which was previously a sushi dead spot. Avoid the ramen unless you like expensive small bowls.
Attended an engagement party here. The food was fantastic. The chef saw that we had a toddler and came out to ask if there was anything she would like then make her a special plate of her favorite Mac and cheese. Great place for a party and for kids. Highly recommended.Service: 5/5
Visited for dinner during a weekend stay on Shelter Island. By far the best dinner we had during our visit. We primarily ordered the specials. Very delicious and flavorful dishes. I look forward to returning.Service: 5/5
Today we stopped I. for an afternoon lunch at the newly renovated Chequit Inn with high expectations based upon the massive investment and articles we read. WHAT A DISASTER! The prices were high which is to be expected for a first class menu but we were not meant to sample it. We were ushered to a table outside, and we were the only ones on the patio for a Friday Afternoon at 3pm. We sat alone with no service for what seemed like a half hour. The individual who sat us did come out 3 times to either ask us if a server had shown up and none had. We left in disgust. I would suggest the owner sell, take the money out because lack of service will surely drive the Checquit out of business in a season or two. The views are poor, the menu is expensive, and the service is somewhere between none existent and poor. The Rams head inn is a better bet on Shelter Island.
We were a party of 6 at the restaurant. The Asian server was wonderful. And the food was very good. Great experience. Food & drinks: The food was fresh, simple and original.
I can only review the restaurant portion, which came highly recommended from a shelter island local. The food was delicious! Like really really good. Prices were reasonable for the food we got. It was our waitresses first day so understandably so service was the latter part of the experience. I'd definitely give it another shot though.
Have been to the Tavern in the Chequit twice and have thoroughly enjoyed the food. Seated outside, six of us could easily converse, but seated inside, five of us had a terrible time hearing each other. While the renovations were pleasing to the eye, the acoustics were dreadful. Can't knock the food though; nice selection and delicious.
Upon arrival no one was at the front desk. After a 15 minute wait and alerting the other staff, a lady whom had been smoking on the deck came around and gave me a key. We went to the Summer Hostel across the street. The rooms were from 1870 or maybe longer, they are not what you’d expect unless you used to living on the streets or in abandon places. The rooms are nod to prohibition and the furnishings reflect it. The one chair and refrigerator on the floor are a nice touch. The bathroom is the size of a closet and the blinds are broken. There are no amenities to speak of. I’m not sure what the appeal is or would be, but if you are interested in “roughing it”, then this is the place. Parking by the way follows the “prison rules” of get what you can, while you can. Next visit to Shelter Island I’d rather stay in a tent or the car.
Ordered a shrimp cocktail and it came on a plate. Was expecting it to come in a cocktail glass :
Cool place, deck is beautiful and has tons of charm. Still undergoing major renovations. Be aware not are rooms are like the photos. The Hotel owns a few properties nearby and not all of them are renovated. Restaurant is fantastic.
