The Highlands (Pennsylvania)

Description

The Highlands is a historic building and property located at 7001 Sheaff Lane near Fort Washington, Whitemarsh Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. The Highlands was built in 1794-1796 by Philadelphia merchant and politician Anthony Morris (1766-1860), and was designed by Philadelphia architect Timothy Matlack (1730-1829). It is a large 2 1/2-story, dressed fieldstone structure in the late Georgian style. The front facade features two, two-story, Ionic order pilasters. Morris was the speaker of the Pennsylvania senate, and had signed the bill authorizing troops to suppress the Whiskey Rebellion. He was also a director of the Bank of North America (1800-1806) and a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania (1806-1817). From 1810 to 1814, he was President James Madison's unofficial envoy to Spain.Morris sold the property to Daniel Hittner (1765-1841) in 1808. In the five years that Hittner owned the estate, he accumulated 300+ additional acres. In 1813, it was sold to wine merchant George Sheaff (1779-1851). After Sheaff's death, the heirs sold off the majority of the estate, leaving a mere 59acre remaining with Sheaff's grandson, John. In 1917, after the death of the last remaining Sheaff heir, it was sold to Miss Caroline Sinkler, and then subsequently sold to her niece Emily Sinkler Roosevelt in 1941. Roosevelt and her husband donated the property to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1957.

Had my wedding here at the end of June, 2022 and it was absolutely perfect! There are many location options for the ceremony/reception all gorgeous, and an overwhelming number of amazing photo spots. Everything is kept up very well, and the mansion is stunning too, especially the bridal and groom suites. I literally couldn’t have asked for a better venue or a better price. And Dana was great to work with--going above and beyond to help out both during the process and the day of!
There's a lot going on in these 2 acres that's a real-life secret garden: greenhouse, adorable goats, a gorgeous manicured garden, a stunning mansion. Great for toddlers too.
If you are thinking about going with the Highlands as your ceremony and/or reception venue, stop all your other searching! You will not find anywhere else that is as beautiful or as affordable. Dana, the manager, was incredibly helpful. We were originally supposed to be married in October of 2020. When COVID changed all our plans, Dana was incredibly supportive as we navigated through multiple rescheduling and changes. Our email thread is probably about 100 messages long and not once did Dana make me feel like I was bothering her or that my questions were too much. She is a large reason why I kept the hope that our dream wedding would actually happen and her support was a large factor in deciding to go forward with the wedding instead of just canceling it after one too many disappointments. Dana is amazing and you want her on your team. In addition to all of her help leading up to the day of the wedding, Dana was great the day of. We had to move our ceremony location last minute because of a sudden shower and didn’t have enough time to enact our original rain plan. Dana came up with a beautiful solution that everyone loved even more than the original ceremony location. What could have been super stressful was easy and pain-free. She was unobtrusive the entire day, so when I got a text with 100 photos and videos that she had taken over the course of the wedding the day after, I was amazed and delighted. I cannot recommend the Highlands Historical enough. The grounds are gorgeous and filled with history and the level of support is unparalleled.
They have the most beautiful gardens! The estate itself is a little interesting, but the gardens are breathtaking. My husband and I held our wedding and reception here and we didn't even have to decorate for the ceremony because it was so lush and green! The staff are a little stricter about decorating the interior, but were incredibly helpful and supportive. It's a lovely, not as well known, location, but is certainly worth a visit! Just one note of caution - the driveway gets quite steep. One of our tiered cakes actually toppled right as it got here we didn't find out until later and it wasn't a big deal, but you may want to let your caterer know not to stack the cake until arriving, if possible.
This was one of front runners for wedding venues. The outdoor space is insane. Huge lush gardens that are so peaceful. If you’re doing your wedding or just want to spend an afternoon in a peaceful place, would suggest.
Absolutely beautiful!! The grounds are perfectly kept. There is so much history here. You feel like you are traveling back in time . Great experience! Michael and Dana are amazing
The grounds and garden of The Highlands Mansion is so romantic and it is perfect for intimate romantic weddings!!
Lovely place. We went exploring for the day and it’s a cute spot. It’s a small space. Lovely spot for pictures.
First of all the grounds and gardens are beautiful and the old architecture is very nice. This historical building is a great venue for all types of events!
I attended a 60th birthday party there, great space customer service was excellent but it's a little outdated as far as dinner tables and chairs.
