This hybrid configuration was implemented by Rocky Mountain Construction and is themed to the Joker, a comic book character villain featured in DC Comics publications. The original Roar roller coaster was constructed by Great Coasters International and opened in 1999.HistoryRoar was a roller coaster at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom constructed by Great Coasters International. When it debuted on May 14, 1999, Roar was the park's first wooden roller coaster and one of its first rides overall during the transition of adding amusement park rides to the marine mammal park. The coaster featured a height of, a first drop of and a top speed of 50mph.In July 2015, Six Flags announced that Roar at Discovery Kingdom would be closing on August 16, 2015. Several weeks later on September 3, 2015, plans were revealed to convert the ride into a steel-tracked coaster called The Joker for the 2016 season. The renovation would be performed by Rocky Mountain Construction using the company's patented I-Box steel track technology on all of the original wooden coaster supports. The roller coaster would also receive new trains themed to the Joker comic book character and would feature three inversions, including a new element marketed as a “step-up under-flip inverted roll”.

"Wood meets steel in this thrilling ride experience with THE JOKER, an exciting and utterly fun hybrid roller coaster. This state-of-the-art “must-ride” coaster marries the best of both classic and modern coaster designs for an unparalleled and unique experience. As the second DC-themed attraction at the park after SUPERMAN Ultimate Flight, THE JOKER’s villainous personality is evident in the coaster’s chaotic twists and turns, including the world’s first ever step-up under flip and the only breaking wave turn on the West Coast."

This ride is CRAZY!!!!!!! Who ever designed this ride needs to be committed. I genuinely beleive it is the creation of a mad man. It redefines everything you know a roller coaster should be. First it's a wood coaster that has three inversions, next its super intense and fast. I thought the ride was going to end two different times but it kept going. Ride it at night, you can't see what's coming at you until you are halfway through it.
this is the BEST ride in the park! it includes inversions and it is a lap bar ride. it's intense and has a pretty steep, but short drop. beware... the line of this ride is ALWAYS long. but they do offer some shade and even some wonky mirrors to look at yourself with. overall, 5/5 stars!!
This is the best coaster in northern California. Gold striker at CGA is a close second. Worth the wait in line and worth the cost of admission on it's own.
The Joker is Nice The Joker is Better Than Roar
Was very suprised by the intensity of this ride! Very un-assuming walking up, until you get fully strapped in by your ankles and waste. Tip: this is a tight fitting seat if you are a big person you wont fit... I saw a guy get kicked off because he couldn't get in the seat and it was a VERY tight fit for me. "By big" is - if your waste is over 40" you're taking a gamble waiting in line, but this was a very fun ride.
I had the best experience with this ride... I really got a trickster vibe from this coaster. The majority of the ride is hidden away from people walking the park... it's mysterious. I came in with preconceptions when I saw glimpses of the wooden roller coaster. These were all broken. I didn't expect inversions. There are some unexpected turns. I expected a shakey ride, bit it was smooth. Also, the girls riding in the cart behind me were hysterically laughing the whole time... as if they been sprayed with Joker's laughing gas... like that episode of the cartoon, back in the day. The one with the fish with the Joker smile stuck on their faces.
aha this is cool ride. It has three small inversions but that's really it. It pretty cool and smooth ride. Fast also but nice.
One of my favorite roller coasters in the park! I love the dips at the beginning trying to trick you into thinking it's a mild ride. My favorite parts are when you go straight while you're upside down! It's smooth and a lot of fun!!
Love this ride! They did a fantastic job converting it to a wood/metal hybrid coaster. The first drop is exhilarating! This is the first real coaster my son went on and he is hooked now. The ride is fast, super smooth, and thrilling! Medusa is still my favorite but this would definitely be my second favorite. The line is typically shorter than the other rides as well as it it kind of off the beaten path.
Hybrid between an old wooden roller coaster and a newer one. Super fun. Feels like you're flying because you're legs are locked in place and your arms are free. Felt awesome.
