My sister has resided at The Laurels at University Park since 2015 after suffering a massive stroke. She is happy and cared for, which is a huge relief. After a rough year and a half during Covid, the facility seems to be staffing full-time people who take their jobs seriously and know the residents by name. I especially would like to commend Catherine Blanche, who organizes all of the social events and decorates The Laurels for each season and holiday. It’s really impossible to explain what an impact she has on the aesthetic without pictures. To say she goes all out is an understatement. She also has filled the courtyard with raised gardens, potted plants, and decorations. Her touches are absolutely everywhere, and I truly believe she plays a huge part in making the facility feel like a HOME. It’s just lovely, and it makes the residents feel special. All of the staff on the Washington Unit are excellent and go out of their way to meet all of my sister’s needs and make her smile. I would also like to commend the PT and speech therapy teams as well, who go out of three way to make sure my sister reaches her greatest potential. Also, Beverly at the front desk is very helpful whenever I call and need information. Overall, I’m so pleased that my sister is so content. I definitely recommend this facility.
My sister was admitted to Laurels from the hospital. It was very important to me that the facility would be clean, which is was. Friendly staff, always greeted me with a smile. They sure my sister received what she needed. I visited her everyday & everything was always the same, clean & Friendly attentive staff. When you have to leave messages, their response was always within 24-48 hrs. I took a chance with this facility & I was not disappointed that my choice was a good one.
Exceptional Activities Director! I can't express enough how wonderful my Family’s experience has been with Catherine Blanche the Director of the activities department.. Her dedication and enthusiasm shine through in everything she does. From organizing engaging events to spending one-on-one time with residents, Catherine goes above and beyond to ensure that everyone feels valued and included. Her creative ideas and thoughtful approach truly make a positive impact on the residents' quality of life. Thank you, Catherine, for your outstanding commitment to making each day special for our mother and all the residents.
My stay at the Laurels was wonderful! mainly Physical and Occupational therapy worked well together getting me back on my feet., Im not calling any names smiling, you know who you are It paid off well, continue to be a blessing to others. I truly appreciate you all.The clinical staff PT,OT,Nurses,CNAs, and management did such a great job as well, I am so grateful for them. At times I felt that the nurse aee overworked. You need to hire more nurses because they play a huge part in healing process as well. The food here is excellent, I felt that I was in a 4 star restaurant, hats off to the chef. I would recommend this facility to people needing rehabilitation services.
My aunt came to the facility following a fall at her apartment which subsequently left her nearly bedridden. She could not sit up, clung to her bed sheets & blankets and lost all ambulatory abilities she had prior to coming to Laurel. She also had problems feeding herself possibly due to dexterity problems and what appeared to be a need to hold on to something to mitigate a possible fall. Since receiving physical therapy she has made substantial improvements. She is stronger in upper and lower body, able to sit up on her own, comfy in the wheelchair, able to pull herself up from her wheelchair to a standing position while holding onto the parallel bar, she is able to take steps within the parallel bars whiled strapped to her physical therapist and trailed by her wheelchair for safety. I have been in the PT room at the invitation of Carmina to view my aunt doing activities to enhance hand/ arm use and dexterity, ambulating therapy and strengthening of legs via repetition of standing from sitting position at parallel bar. Her therapist Carmina et. al., have done a wonderful job helping with my aunt’s overall physical capacity. A Special Commendation goes to Carmina who has apprised me via phone and videos of my aunts progress over the months. She displays inordinate concern and commitment to my aunt, and I’m sure she is the same way with all the other residents she gives care to. The whole PT department is outstanding and Carmina is simply WONDERFUL.
The Laurels of University Park needs to be recognized for caring for my spouse. The facility staff was extremely professional. The Cnas; nurses; dietary; house keepers; social worker; engineering and front desk receptionist were all amazing. We thank you for taking care of our love one. I was first hestitate, about leaving my husband there. Our experience was wonderful. If my spouse needs further assistant. I'll transport him to the Laurels of University Park. We thank you, for your gracious support. May God continue to shine brightly on you and your love ones.
This was Bryant & Stratton first experience with nursing students at The Laurel. As the Instructor I first met with Dean Clemmons- Little and other Senior leadership. It was such a warm and professional experience. Then we met Nurse Charisse who is knowledgeable, professional, and always strategic in delegating appropriate assignments to ensure that my students receive the best experiences at every clinical- Charisse came in on her day off to ensure the continuity and we were most grateful. We enjoyed each of your Guest and thank them for allowing us to be part of their care. Everyone we encountered were helpful, accommodating, knowledgeable and committed to us having good experience. We can not Thank you and your team enough for such a wonderful experience and hope we can continue this professional partnership. Again, Charisse- You are an amazing nurse that keep your Guest at the center of care!
Tim Burner the rehab director whenever I called or texted he was there to assist me and he was very friendly. My CNA Joann Strothers, she was kindand and helpful. She made sure I always had my snacks and was ready for my dialysis appointments. My night nurse Bernetta Brown was very helpful with making my various doctors appointments. All of the nurses who cared for me were incredible. My medications were always on time and they explained each medication to me when I had questions. The activities coordinator Catherine Blanche runs a great activity program, very engaging and loads of fun. The therapists Mash and Adam always gave me loads of encouragment and explained each exercise so that I understood what muscles I was building. Tammy the ward clerk helped coordinate my transportation and was very helpful. I would highly recommend The Laurels of University Park.
My almost 88-year old Mother has been taken care of here 24/7 for two years now with great care; this gives me such peace of mind. I am in touch regularly with staff and they call me or email me the minute something arises that I need to know. Care Plan meetings are pre-arranged every three months. I would like to highlight Beverly Cobb, who answers the endlessly ringing phone lines with kindness and professionalism; Lea Clemmons-Little, Director of Nursing; Tiffany Coughlin, Assistant Director of Nursing; Angela, Nurse; Kenya Ward, Social Services Coordinator; Gisela Hornberger, Speech-Language Pathologist; the Health Aides and CNAs that work tirelessly day and night doing everything from bringing her meals, helping her get ready for the day Joyce to dispensing her meds *and* Mom's favorite bunch, the Activities Department! They are: Catherine Blanche, Director and her Assistants, Catherine Buie and Delores Edloe. They keep Mom happy and busy with Coffee and Friends each morning, ice cream socials and games, delivering her Sunday Richmond Times-Dispatch and packages from Walmart, arranging video calls; you name it, they do it. Mom has a large private room with a half-bath and wall-mounted t.v. There is plenty of closet and drawer space for her clothes, a comfy sofa and there is a lovely garden with flowers and trees if she wants to sit outside. This facility is kept scrupulously clean. I would like to add that Mom came to the Laurels directly from a local hospital after suffering a bad fall and respiratory pneumonia. She was so frail and weak I didn't know how long she would be with us. With vigilant care and nutrition, walker training and numerous other therapies, especially speech therapy, she prospered, gained weight and became Mom again. They also have a beauty salon, where she enjoys having her hair cut and colored!
The Laurels of University Park is an AMAZING destination for skilled nursing rehab, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. Additionally, it is PERFECT for a loved one who needs 24/7 nursing care for the long term. Set in an idyllic location convenient for visiting your loved one during their therapy or long term stay. The staff are caring professionals who are all passionate about delivering the best care possible. Clean and attentive this is an OUTSTANDING healthcare community!
