Great museum for all ages. Also history is being restored in front of your eyes! Having the actual first Ironside that you can see and almost touch is amazing! I can't wait until it's all finished! I was with my sister and her family and had fun playing large scale battleship and exploring with them. Highly recommend this to anyone in the area!
This museum is great. Extremely well done. With a $1 entrance fee, I had low expectations but this museum impressed around every corner. It focuses on the "Merrimack and Monitor" ships primarily, but it never gets boring. Quality displays that provided plenty of interesting information in a variety of formats. There's also a park that looked great, but we didn't have time to visit. This museum is well worth the stop.
This was a beautiful museum to go to! It was surprisingly large, with lots of information on different vessels and maritime events. This place included beautifully detailed hand-made models of ships, real vessels, shipwrecked parts of the USS Monitor, and a full sized replica of the USS Monitor. There was also an extremely large park you could enter for free, with lots of wildlife. This is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon at!!
Couldn't pass up $1 museum admission! Really neat museum and they have a nice play area for kids with a giant battleship game. One part of the museum is full of model ships, including one of the titanic, and there is a model ship maker you can watch as he works. There's also a full scale USS Monitor replica and you can walk the deck of the ship. Upstairs you can look into the Batton Conservation Complex and watch recovered portions of the Monitor undergoing conservation treatment.
Beautiful museum! Great for families! Admission was only $1 when we visited. There was something for everyone here. Children's area, amazing artifacts, and emersive exhibits. Our favorite was the miniature ship models. The kids loved the scavenger hunt. Everyone working here was so friendly. The cafe was closed the day we went. However, there are great places to eat nearby.
Stunning natural beauty. Stopped by on a whim. Took a short walk on the Norton Trail. Came to the bridge and stopped there. Absolutely the most peaceful place. Then I looked down over the water and saw the turtles. Wow...beautiful creatures. These aren't the loggerheads by the sea, these are Snapping turtles of various sizes. Amazing sight. Do not feed any wild life in any park. But especially here. These turtles can snap a finger in a minute. I watched them from the bridge. Safe distance...next time I'll go further. Loved it
We spent most of our time at the excellent exhibit about the steam ironclads USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia and their epic battle at Hampton Roads, Va, in 1862. A very comprehensive and fascinating exhibit which sets that event in context. Sorry to discover the cafe is closed for renovations, but the $1.00 entrance fee is simply amazing! Plan to return to see the rest of the museum and enjoy the grounds.
Awesome place for adults and kids. Clean, spacious, and rich. There is a lot to see. A good 1.5 hr walk to see everything or almost everything, and it was a great experience. I loved this place so much I went twice during my trip to Hampton Roads. Well worth spending a couple hours here. There is something for everyone, from kids to history enthusiasts.
