Men who come to MCCNM have solved many of life's problems but are now stumped by relationships, employment, substance abuse, anxiety, and/or depression. Here, they can build on their strengths, find solutions, and become healthier versions of themselves.
Men attend counseling at the Men's Counseling Center of Northern Michigan for many reasons:
• Relationship problems such as frequent arguments and abuse leading to separation and divorce
• Angry outbursts which lead to emotional or physical abuse
• Employment problems such as difficulties with co-workers or unfair bosses
• Loss and loneliness due to separation or divorce
• Mental heath issues such as depression—feeling down and low on energy—or, with anxiety—worrying too much, always looking at the bad side of things
• Excessive use of alcohol or drugs leading to problems in relationships, at work, or with the law
• Stress, feeling overwhelmed by the demands of life
• Loss of a family member or friend
• A desire for personal growth for men who are doing pretty well in their lives, but still want to grow emotionally and spiritually
Though men are often initially reluctant to attend counseling, they quickly relax in our safe environment. They often make remarkable progress. Their wives and partners report: “Therapy opened up a new world for my husband. He isn’t perfect, but he tries harder. He’s so much easier to live with.” Guys manage their disappointments and frustrations better; they’re less guarded and more open. In a word, they’re just happier.
