We want to serve you!
Our Story – What's in a name?
by April Smith Patterson
What's in a name? Everything is in the name. It's to speak of who we are, what we do, what we are known for. In this case it's what we want you, our friends and customers, to envision when you see or hear our name for the first time. Something to stick with you. Something different. Distinctive. Something easy to relate to and remember.
From the beginning it has been a desire that our business become a real marketplace hosting many kinds of shops, so we were very serious about the name. Quite honestly, we struggled with that. We sought the close family and friends for naming ideas and suggestions. Finally, my mother-in-law came up with the word “storehouse.”
Storehouse is a Biblical term and is defined in the dictionary as a building used for storing goods. Its synonyms include warehouse, depository, repository, store, storeroom, depot and storage. It also indicates there is a large supply of something.
It’s also noted in Deuteronomy 28:12 it states; "The LORD will open for you His good storehouse, the heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand."
We love tradition and history, so we were pleased to discover that the term “storehouse” is what retail establishments were referred to in 19th century America. This made the word even more special for us to use.
So "storehouse" became the base for creating the name.
“The Mill” is actually the term we call the area were our family's businesses are headquartered in Moss, Tennessee. Everyone refers to what we do with our manufacturing businesses like Honest Abe Log Homes, Barky Beaver Mulch and Soil Mix and our hardwood operations as “the mill” Naturally, we wanted to incorporate that, which is special to us, in with the storehouse name.
Hence, “The Mill Storehouse” was born!
A Little History
The Mill Storehouse actually started in autumn of 2016 as Barky’s Front Porch & Bloomy’s Boutique. It was a division of our all natural mulch and soil company, Barky Beaver Mulch & Soil, Inc.
We wanted to create a neat place for people to purchase from our customers fruits, veggies, hay, pumpkins, etc. Similar to a coop to help out our local community along with showcasing flowers and potted plants grown by our customers in our new soil mix. We then grew into a boutique offering clothing and home décor.
The names Barky’s Front Porch and Bloomy’s Boutique seemed not to clarify all we offered and actually confused customers.
So, we decided to change the name to be all encompassing in our offerings. We now have a new storefront building and an even larger retail area than before. Plus, we've added many new products and services, including a mobile store that will travel to events and can be requested for a private event or festival!
