The Palace Saloon

About

Floridas Oldest Bar located in Downtown Fernandina Beach, Fl

Description

The Palace Saloon was the last American tavern to close during Prohibition, and it survived that dry era as an ice cream parlor. Once a favorite haunt of the Carnegies, the Rockefellers and other socialites, The Palace Saloon is still operating today. In fact, it's one of the frequent stops on the Amelia Island Museum of History’s weekly walking tours of Historic Downtown Fernandina Beach.

Still in the original location, this watering hole's colorful history began in the late 1800s. According to local historians, the owners of the Saloon were selling liquor until the very last minute before Prohibition took effect. People from neighboring states waited in long lines for their share.

The Palace has had to adapt to earn its title of "Florida's oldest" continuously operated drinking establishment. According to local lore, it was the last bar in Florida to close on the eve of Prohibition. A shrewd business man, Hirth stored up for a last hurrah selling till midnight and grossing $60,000 in a single day. Another first for the Palace, it was the first hard liquor bar to begin serving Coca-Cola, around 1905. The Palace survived the Prohibition years by selling Texaco gasoline, ice cream, special wines, 3 percent near-beer, and cigars. And for those strong enough to try it, legend says Hirth made available his signature Cumberland whiskey. A fire in 1999 nearly dealt the saloon a deathblow. However, through inspired and enthusiastic ownership, the saloon was restored and the Palace has regained its nostalgic charm and vitality.

The Palace continues to bring folks together. Old friends still gather here rubbing elbows with passing Shipcaptains and local well-to-do. And once news is swapped and formalities concluded, they get down to the more serious business of dustin' the sea spray off their jackets and enjoying the long-awaited shoreside beer. Go ahead, belly up to the bar, and as the bartender slides a mug of suds to you, the ghosts from ten decades past join in drinking to your health.

The Palace Saloon is by far the most iconic saloon in Florida. With so much history it was stepping back in time. And the other plus was meeting Leslie! One of the coolest bartenders we have had the pleasure of meeting. She was friendly and very easy to make conversation with. Leslie also had made one of the best old fashioned’s and we have had our fair share around the state!! We would go back to Amelia Island just to sit at the bar of the Palace Saloon.
Even though it’s the oldest bar in FLA, this place never gets old. Love the historic feel and ambiance!Food: 5/5
Stopped in @ the Palace Saloon today. Great experience for the afternoon. I ordered the finest cola, single barrel slight Carmel aged. The bar tender knew exactly what I wanted. Told him I was riding my Harley so no alcohol was involved. I recommend this place if your in the area !!!
This bar is so cool. It’s the oldest bar in Florida and it retains the old world charm. Lucky for us it’s modernized with beer on tap, great selection of liquors, and a pool table room.Food: 5/5
At Palace Saloon, you're taking a step back in time! This beloved watering hole has been quenching thirsts since 1876 and is the oldest bar still standing in Florida. From its solid wood barstools to tales of adventure told within, this place will have your imagination running wild as soon as you walk through those doors - why not make it an experience with an ice-cold beer? Who knows what stories are waiting for you here?!
Update: still a classic. The oldest bar in Florida. If you're a history buff or simply love the allure of a classic bar, then stop by Florida's oldest bar - it's an experience not to be missed! From the moment you walk in, you're transported to a different time, complete with pirate tales and old photographs that adorn the walls. And, of course, what's a visit to a classic bar without a drink in hand? The drinks here are as expected of a full bar, and the ambiance is unbeatable. So, whether you're a local or just passing through, add this gem to your itinerary - you won't regret it!
Stopped in on a quiet Thursday afternoon. Had the famous Pirate’s Punch, wife had a Blue Moon. Plenty of history here. Enjoyed our drinks.
Very unique saloon. Seems to be a very popular stop. I will say this...the pirate punch is not worth it. That is probably the worst drink I've ever had in my life. My husband said he would compare it to prune juice. It's that bad. And for 12 bucks a cup...pass. Went in and listened to the live music - was good but super loud. They have security which checks anyone that looks close to the age limit. Variety of ages hang out here. They have a pool room in the back of the saloon with a few games. They also have what looked like another bar area overflow. That wasn't up and going. The whole outside is turf and has cornhole and strung patio lights either tables. Really cool area.
Another nice Fernandina place to have a few beers and drinks. The staff was friendly and the crowd pleasant. Parking: On street, or lot parking
Bartender far more interested in yakking with his friends than serving customers. Wife charged $12 for weak and tasteless "rum punch" dispensed from a tap into a plastic cup. I was never asked for my order despite multiple attempts to get his attention. Waste of time and money tourist trap.Service: 1/5
