Description

We are an independent Brooklyn-based company that organizes global, collaborative art projects. Our flagship endeavor is The Sketchbook Project, a crowd-sourced library that features 36,154 artists' books contributed by creative people from 135+ countries. Brooklyn Art Library is our storefront exhibition space in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY where The Sketchbook Project collection is on view to the public.

The Sketchbook Project began in 2006 in Atlanta, GA and moved to New York City in 2009. Since that time, our small organization has grown into a worldwide community of more than 70,000 artists. By focusing on the intersection of hands-on art making and new technology, The Sketchbook Project nurtures community-supported art projects that harness the power of the virtual world to share inspiration in the real world.

I love this place it is such a cool experiment! I love looking into people's sketchbooks! I wish their website was a bit more intuitive, it's difficult to find the type of art or an artist. I chose 1 book I thought was one thing and got 2 books from the librarian which didn't seem at all like what I asked to see. Not sure where the second book even came from. It's easier to just browse through what's already out on the tables. First time I went I got a super helpful guy, definitely enthusiastic about art and talking about it. Last time I went I got a girl who seemed a little aloof, which made me feel like I was bothering her for coming in. However, the atmosphere and the products they're selling are really nice. They also allow you to take any pictures and post them online so you can share any new artists you find!
Billed as the world’s largest collection of sketchbooks. $30 gets yours into the mix. $65 to be added to the digital library. The have a small collection of stationary items for sale. Was formerly on N3rd in Williamsburg prior to 2016.
So cool - what a place! The iPads checkout system is kind of hard to use. But overall it’s such a cool concept. We loved it! They also have some great merch. This place is a gem! Truly a cool repository of international art.
As a participant in the sketchbook project, I was upset to hear about the books that were either damaged or lost in the fire last year. I’m even more upset about how participants were not notified re the status of their books. Per response to another review, there were over 48,000 books that were part of the sketchbook project. When I submitted my request for the status of my book on January 6, 2023…there was an excel spreadsheet on the website with only 124 participant names with the status of safe, damaged, or lost. 124 artists, but over 48,000 books…and now the whole thing is being shut down…with a final message being that no status means a book was probably lost. Such a fine way to treat all that have supported you throughout the years. I’ll probably never know what happened to my book, so I’m glad it’s shutting down. But I’m sad for all that the participants have invested and lost.
Brooklyn Art Library is world renowned! It holds the largest collection of sketchbooks and has been featured in main media like The New York Times and Fox 5. There are so many cool sketchbooks you can see and hold Literally, walls filled with them... I have about 5 their currently and they have lots of fun items to purchase! Williamsburg a very neighborhood lots of murals and typically you can find street parking.
The Brooklyn Art Library is shutting down and the tens of thousands of artists whose artwork was the heart and core of the organization now have to pay $15 to have their sketchbooks returned to them. These same artists might have paid up to $65 to submit a sketchbook originally to the Library. The founder Steven Peterman now runs a chic little bagel shop with his wife in St. Pete, Florida. In other words, not interested in running the Library anymore. Some sketchbooks might go to a museum, but it is not clear whose or why and the founder is asking people to help him find museums or partner organizations to take the sketchbooks. Will the non-profit dissolve after all the sketchbooks are given away? What happens to those sketchbooks that are not returned or given to a museum, are they tossed? What started out as an interesting project, began with the founder and ends with the same founder.
Such a beautiful experience, this is really how library's get built. Its amazing walking through and having to choose a book and wait. I love how its quiet and you get to read the lives of others or their thoughts at that point in time. I went their due to Instagram and free supplies but I missed out on the supplies and ended up spending $50+
What a cute library! It’s full of sketches from people all over the world! You can visualize their stories and share you own too. The library also sell art supplies and very unique cards/postcards. Worth a visit and soak yourself in those sketches for a couple of hours!
Descent collection of zines. There's a photo booth on the back! It's a great place to stay cool and read during summer time in NY. Highly recommend it.
This is a really special gem! I participated as a contributing artist. I discovered recently that they moved to St. Petersburg in FL. Apparently while transporting, the truck caught on fire & they lost 7,000 books, but saved the rest. It is reported to be up & operating, but with limited access. They are trying to regroup & recover from what happened. There is a GoFund me page.
