Just went for the first time and really enjoyed the food and service. Our waiter was very helpful and lovely. We had some questions and she knew all about the dishes, which isn’t often the case. Her recommendations were also good. I was a big fan of the gooey and delicious, low key sweetness of the bread pudding pancakes. The grilled corn and cheese sandwich was a standout. Think of creamy elotes in sandwich form. Really creamy and flavorful. The red potato mash is very sour cream and chive forward and I found it delicious. My quiche was a little lacking in flavor, so I wouldn’t necessarily recommend that. But it’s a big portion which some might appreciate.
First Tymer! This place is a MUST!!! The food & drinks are sooooo good. The banana pudding pancakes may be the best pancake I ever had. Brunch ends at 3pm. It’s a small spot but there is out door seating and the food is so worth itFood: 5/5
I ordered the Hash with chicken sausage, listed as $13.95 on the menu. It came with roasted local potatoes, red onion, mushroom, peppers, red barn heritage white cheddar cheese, two over-easy organic cage-free eggs, and scallion sour cream. Unfortunately, there was an imbalance in the dish as there were too many red onions and peppers and not enough hash. The hash was basically small fries, and they mixed in all the other ingredients and called it hash. The onion and peppers overpowered the dish, and it became a soggy mess at the bottom. The only redeeming thing about the dish was the mushroom. Our first waiter was all right. When she left, a second waiter took over and was a lot friendlier. The tables here are uncomfortably tiny, and we overheard other guests requesting a different table but were turned down despite plenty of seating available. However, I enjoyed the Americano here and the music they played, most of which was from the 2000 era. I want to like Southport Grocery and Cafe, but unfortunately, the Hash with chicken sausage did not meet my expectations due to the imbalance of ingredients. I would come back to try out their other items.
Cute little place with some very tasty food. We ate outdoors busy Sunday noon. A bit of a wait but well worth it. The grilled coffee cake is an A+ that we split in addition to the brisket hash. The hash is a hearty dish and we all enjoyed it all of us ordered it because it sounded so good. Putting it in the rotation for sure.Food: 5/5
Delicious breakfast. I had the gravy and biscuits, the brisket in the gravy was bomb. And the rice pancake with cinnamon sauce ….mouthwateringFood: 5/5
We love this place. The food is excellent. We got the hash with wheat toast and biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs on top. The biscuits are the best I have had in Chicago. The pulled pork gravy is absolutely amazing. The staff are very friendly. They were apologizing to us when we accidentally spilled our coffee cream. Completely our fault and thank you for being so helpful in cleaning it up. The free cupcake for checking in on yelp was also amazing. The seating is community so you can be potentially set next to louder people. But everyone was very friendly. Definitely recommend if in Southport.
this place is pretty good. there’s limited bar seating if you’re solo, which i think is nice. it took a while to get served, but the server was friendly. the coffee is served in a little cup like a sake situation, which is cute but the cup is hot to hold without a handle and mine came with debris all over it. i got the chorizos and eggs, which was decent. there was chile verde layered in the bottom which was a nice surprise.
Overall: Delicious, charming, and charming, brunch doesn't get much better! The good: Superb tasting food, the quiche was fantastic and the coffee cake was well done. The variety of the menu puts a fun twist on brunch. I'm sure the non-breakfast options are great. Charming atmosphere and also tons of to-go bakery items and bakery spices and goods. The bad: Small space, especially if the outside is closed. Tight squeezes. Service can be hindered due to that. Menu, while great, good of had a few more options. Long wait Atmosphere: 8/10 Service: 8/10 Food: 10/10
Service was very kind and sincere. Drinks were ok not balanced enough and not standardized. Food was not good. The breakfast sand which was so dry I couldn’t even eat it. I told the server 3 times I couldn’t eat it because it was so dry and she said let me bring you some more water, maybe try it with some. I just don’t get this maybe it was a one off mistake because everyone loves this place but I don’t think I’ll ever be back.
Pricing on the Google menu is so off, everything is more expensive when see the real menu. Portion is so tiny for that price and please, for a cafe in Southport - it's already crazy that you don't allow dogs on your patio - please put a sign so your customers don't get seated with their dog only to be turned away with a half hearted 'sorry, I can give you the owner's email'. Who has time to email the owner to get permission or an explanation? Please do your customers a favor in this dog friendly neighborhoodand place a big sign to give a heads up instead of asking us to tie our dog outside the patio under the hot sun, thank you.
