The walnut was very welcoming, and very well thought out. We sat at the bar and was greeted by the bartender Ben, he was a very outgoing and social young man that clearly loves what he does. The menu was very simple and easy to understand. We ordered a burger basket, and a house salad with chicken and avocado. Within 10 minutes, our food was fresh and delivered in front of us. Very satisfied with both meals, a nice touch was the cheese on top of the fries. The beer was so good I had to take a picture of it. Five cities bikini bottom is a wheat beer with a splash of pineapple, definitely one of my new favorite beers. If you’re visiting Des Moines, or one of the locals, this is definitely a nice spot to have a drink or some good food.
4.25* out of 5 Food: 5* Atmosphere: 5* Value: 4* Service: 3* 07/15/2022 Had read about this place and drove by it several times before getting the opportunity to eat there this past Summer. My wife and I decided to order several appetizers so that we could experience more on the menu. We ordered the Loco Moco see picture on the waiter's recommendation and really enjoyed it! The hamburger, gravy and egg combination were great together. We also ordered the Chipotle Chicken Tacos see picture - which we thoroughly enjoyed and would also recommend. If you are in the area, I highly recommend this place for their unique menu items. You won't regret stopping by to give it a try. My and I wife have visited The Walnut around 10 times in the last year. The food is always great, reasonably priced, and the servers are always friendly. The building itself is converted from the old Walnut Tire and Battery Co. and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It's very tastefully done. It has both indoor and outdoor seating and has become our "go to" place for a meal while on our bikes.
Food was delicious and service was great. Stopped here on a whim one Saturday afternoon. Would highly recommend. The kids mac & was amazing. I might order it next time
An impressive menu with some unique selections highlight the laid-back atmosphere of the restaurant. I've had many of the regular items and recently had the brunch for the first time. Top notch!Food: 5/5
Ordered beer and appetizers. Loved the atmosphere and had great staff. I ordered a tall IPA according to the menu & price but only received a normal glass. Asked the waitress why and she said the brewery set the prices, but it doesn’t make sense why I still didn’t receive a 16oz beer when that’s what the menu said. Otherwise all of it was delicious. The food was awesome and there were lots of local brews, which I really appreciated. A nice amount of seating and TV’s to watch football on!
The wait staff is awesome, the food is very good, the atmosphere is cool, and the prices are very reasonable. Jamie & Sara are top of the line employees that go above & beyond. This one of our favorite places to visit.Food: 5/5

The Walnut is one of our favorite places to eat in Des Moines! Great service and they always remember you, so it has a small-town feeling in the city. There are several delicious vegan options too! The house-made vegan ranch dressing is incredible! Vegetarian options: The veggie tacos are amazing, as is the spicy vegan bowl! They have vegan blueberry pancakes for Saturday brunch!
Had another great lunch at The Walnut. Service and ambiance are great. I appreciate that you can seat yourself and don't have to hassle with a host/hostess. Vegan/gluten free options are available along with a full menu. Street parking is available, otherwise a nice place to meet folks for lunch. Cheers!
