Thomas Edison National Historical Park

About

Where modern America was invented. Discover where America’s greatest inventor changed our world forever.

Description

At the corner of Main Street and Lakeside Avenue in West Orange, New Jersey stands a group of red brick buildings. To the passing motorist the buildings betray little evidence of their glory days and of the people who worked inside. A short distance away is Glenmont, Thomas Edison's estate. Together, the laboratory and residence preserve the work and character of America's foremost inventor, Thomas Edison and the family, friends and business associates who played a key role in his success.

Mission
Our mission is to promote an international understanding and appreciation of the life and extraordinary achievements of Thomas Alva Edison by preserving, protecting and interpreting the park’s extensive historic artifact and archive collections at the Laboratory Complex and Glenmont, the Edison family estate.

Description
Thomas Edison National Historical Park is located in West Orange, New Jersey, a township approximately six miles from Newark, NJ, and fifteen miles from Manhattan. The park encompasses two sites – the Laboratory Complex and the Glenmont Estate, former home to Thomas and Mina Edison.
Thomas A. Edison embodied the spirit of invention that gripped America in the late nineteenth century. With his team of scientists and technicians, Edison earned 1,093 U.S. patents in his lifetime, most for inventions that originated in the West Orange labs. The park is a memorial to the man and a place where the roots of American inspiration and innovation can be discovered.
Today, Edison’s brick and concrete laboratories are well integrated into West Orange’s urban landscape but these solidly built Victorian buildings still retain a sense of their former prominence as the core of Thomas Edison’s “invention factory”. For forty-four years, from 1887 to 1931, the site served as the inventor’s research and development center.

Awesome but small. I really enjoyed walking thru and exploring. However, it's about a 2 hour tour if you take your time and read most signs. It's amazing to see it setup from when it was operating. Overall, I think It's worth the drive. The mansion is generally closed but you can make reservations to see it. Otherwise, you can only walk around it and you can't even see inside. It's surrounded by private homes and you must get a pass to go in from the factory where you pay for admission.
This was a really awesome piece of early American history to see! The staff was very knowledgeable, making it more worth the trip. No matter your thoughts on Edison from things you may have learned, this was amazing. The old machinery, the books, and so much more.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$11–15
Super cool place to visit even if you can't get advanced reservations for his house it is still great to do the laboratory complex tour self guided. Definitely would recommend the junior ranger programs that the national park sites have to as a great way for the kids or anyone to learn about the park while earning the awesome badge that they have.
A National Historic Park hidden gem in the middle of the city. Need reservations a week in advance for the Edison home Glenmont Grounds. Prices depend on type of ticket.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Great little detour to explore the labs and library of Edison! We watched the intro movie at the visitor center and walked the 3 floors of the labs. My highlight was on the 3rd floor seeing the first real recording studio, and the collection of unique phonographs. The Rangers were super friendly as always. Don't forget to get your NPS Passport stamps for the Laboratory and Glenmont Estate!
The laboratory was well preserved and it was very informative. The laboratory was very modern for its time and its amazing to see thomas edisons inventions. This place is recommended for the science geeks and curious people alike.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$6–10
The day we went they were closed for renovation. We were there around 3:00 and it should have been open till 4:00 but they were painting and very busy inside. So we walked along the outside and took some pictures from there.Visited onWeekday
I thought Edison was an dude that is did his inventing out of a garage, but this dude had a huge factory with tons of employees. We hit up a lot of National Parks because we do the Passport stamps and this was a welcome change from all the battle fields we see. You will be amazed, make the stop if you can.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$11–15
A great place for people of any age to visit. Amazing look into one of the great inventors in our American history.
One of the best museums I've been to! Everything is original and authentic, including Edison's 3-floor library with work desk and it's untouched contents. You can hear a playing of an old phonograph and see the original one that Edison made his first recording of "Mary Had a Little Lamb."
