On 10/25/22 My elderly mother had fallen at home and injured her knee, I decided to take her to the Toledo Hospital ER on the recommendation of her primary physician. With the help of a neighbor I got her into my car, the hospital is only 5 min. away, when I arrived at the ER 2:00 PM I went to the first reception desk and asked the woman working the desk for a wheelchair and assistance getting my mother out of the car…she said “ The wheelchairs are over there but I can’t send someone out to help you- we can’t have our people hurting themselves” I didn’t say a thing, I just thought to myself “don’t hospital personnel transfer people all the time?” I pushed the wheelchair out to the car and two nurses did come out to help me get her into the wheelchair and inside. To be fair I have not been in an ER in 15+ years, but my expectations were extremely different from the reality of the visit. We had to sit in the primary waiting room for 2 hours, my mother than was moved to the ER area and was placed on a stretcher in the hall around 4 PM, around 4:30 PM a young lady asked if the nurse practitioner had seen my mom yet to which we answered no, about 20 minutes later the nurse practitioner came to the back hall where they placed my mother spoke to her and sent her for x-rays, we remained in the hall till about 6:30 PM, my mother was moved to a ER room at this time. The same nurse practitioner came to the ER room and informed my mother that they didn’t see anything in the x-rays and after 5 hrs. of being in the ER the discharge orders were to take Tylenol and follow up with an orthopedic doctor. The entire time we were there I assumed that we would be seeing a orthopedic doctor. Maybe my expectations are way off but this was a lot to put my 80-year-old mother through, just to be told to take some Tylenol and go home after 5 hrs. When I asked for some help to get her in the car when we are leaving they told me it may take a while because of shift change. The nurse that was coming on duty was very nice and did go out with us to help get my mom into the car. We finally left around 7:30 PM Outside of the very first person we encountered when we arrived at the ER everybody was very nice and courteous to my mother but the overall experience was extremely hard to go through. *Note: I did call the hospital and left a message with the ER manager about the woman that was rude to me when I arrived and as of 10/27 I’ve had no call back.
I was not very happy that I spent the night after I had surgery, then the next day told me that I could go home with blizzard conditions, I wanted to stay any night but was more less told me that it is going to be the same conditions as today. So Husband and I left, We live an hour away going toward Cleveland, We left least to say that 46 car pile up on the Turnpike was about was about 15 miles up from where they was making everyone get off the Turnpike. This was my worst fear, I am just glad we made it home safe. The pic below is what it was like driving home, we maybe 25 on the Turnpike all the way home.
The staff from the pediatric ER as well as the Children’s hospital is very efficient and well rounded. Only encountered one ER doctor who was very rude and had no bedside manner. However the rest of the folks were good natured and professional. It’s very enlightening to know your child is well cared for and seen as a human not just a number. Only a few downsides to the facility is 1. Not a lot of great parking choices. However it appears they are fixing one of the garages 2. Not very convenient Dinning choices for off hours. 3. Their vending machines and food options are all diet and sugar free. I understand they are a medical facility however folks should be able to choose their own dietary needs not have it chosen for them. All in all a very clean and caring facility.
I had a great doctor deliver my twins. But other than that, when I was in my room, most of my nurses were very rude. When I told one of the nurses I was in pain, she said something to the effect of "you're not in pain, you're just not feeling well. There's a difference". It made me feel horrible and uncared for. I also did not appreciate the nurses who would say they had c-sections and "got over it". That is very unhelpful. They also don't keep the babies in the nursery so the mom can rest. I could not wait to finally go home where I would feel safer and more comfortable with my family. What moms need after they have babies are compassion and caring, not feeling degraded and uncared for by hospital staff.
I was very please with the dentist who operated on my son's teeth, he was extremely patient with him and took his time and talked and worked him through it!! Great job, thanks!!
Like every reasonably healthy adult, I thought I was bulletproof. Until, I busted the proverbial “gut” and wound up taking the ambulance ride to Toledo Hospital. Yep, gastric hemorrhaging woke me up. So, I got to see the ER closeup and personal, then on to the intensive care unit of gastroenterology and a wonderful twelfth floor view of the park. After two blood transfusions, one in ER and one in intensive care, come the morning, I was ready to go. Back to my old insubordinate, obstinate, self again; I proceeded to argue my case for release to the doctors that came to check my condition and explain the situation. Well, these guys and gals must have been paying attention in med school. After using enough medical acumen to convince me of how close I had come to death, I relented. Unfortunately, my situation had occurred on a Friday, so, after three nights of enduring a tiny bed and trying to sleep with leads to monitors all over my chest; I had the procedure performed to repair the damage. Cut to chase, the nurses charged with my care in every department, were kind, compassionate, and skillful. I cannot thank them enough. The hospital as a facility is as good as a hospital can be. The breakfast, after three days of no solid food was disappointing, but that would be my only complaint. I would utilize this facility again, if I had to. I hope not, but I wouldn’t hesitate.
I wish I can give zero to this hospital. I just gave birth there. Postpartum care after labor is horrible simply you have to speak up to get the minimum expected. My baby lost 10% of his weight first day in the nursery. I had to ask for all my medication even stool softener. They simply do their stupid checklist and prefer to kick you out of the hospital ASAP. I was sent home in less than 30 hrs. They ignored my leg swelling, my baby weight loss, and my back pain. They simply don’t want me there. I don’t mind paying more money but to receive good treatment, especially during this critical time.
My daughter is an adult with special needs She was unable to stand let alone walk This came on suddenly and she was right I took her to The Toledo Hospital One bad nurse just like one one bad apple spoiled it all She even told us that they wanted to send her home as they where not busy Well she did nothing to help Let me to do all the work and told me I didn't have to stay Well if I didn't stay who speak for my daughter? She was hanging Christmas stocking in the nurses station so I know she wasn't taking care of other My daughter was admitted but they had no beds on the floor Ask for the doctor and told him she wasn't staying I can take better care of her at home If this ever happens again I will find a different hospital
Wait time is always long in the ER but I had the absolute sweetest nurse. Abigail in the ER is fantastic <3 and the radiology team was great. I appreciate the work y’all are doing!
A few years ago my husband had open heart surgery at Toledo Hospital. About 16 hours after surgery he suffered a stroke. To make a long story short..it was caused because the ceratoid test he had done the week before was not looked at before surgery and his right ceratoid was totally blocked. After surgery the norm is to keep blood pressure low but in my husbands case his body made another path up his cheek and was protected because of his high blood pressure. Obviously, because they did not check the test it was lowered and my husband suffered the stroke. He is not the same he has memory loss, he drags his left foot and has very painful naprapathy. The surgeons only "word" was he was "remorseful". As always you sign forms which covers everyone but the patient. I recently had surgery at Premedica Flower hospital my experience was not very good. The surgeon was great but my experience in pre-op and anesthesia was not. it was very different from the other surgery I had at another hospital. When I got home the front of my top left tooth fell off. It could not be saved so I have to get a crown or go toothless. I called the patient advocate she passed me to the surgical manager and she passed me to someone in the anesthesia department. Their answer was I signed a form and losing a tooth was a known thing! The only form I remember signing is that I agreed to having anesthesia. I did not have any idea I would lose a tooth! I just wonder how these people can be accountable for their mistakes? If there is no accountability who is safe? They can do anything they want and there is no accountability. We ask our children to be responsible but don't expect it to apply to ourselves. Very sad times. Life is hard enough. When does the arrogance stop. You can see someone gave me a number to call and follow up on this review. I left 3 messages and they did not call me back. This is over 3 days. This is another example of their arrogance.
