Tompkins Square Library

About

The Tompkins Square Branch of The New York Public Library has been serving residents of Manhattan's Lower East Side since 1904.

Description

Historically, it dates back to 1887, when it opened as the Fifth Street Branch of the Aguilar Free Library. The branch relocated three times before moving to its present site facing Tompkins Square Park. Designed by the famous architects McKim, Mead and White and constructed with funds donated to the City by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, the three-story branch has 16-foot ceilings and a spacious children's room on the second floor. Traditionally, Tompkins Square has served varied ethnic populations, including German, Italian, Jewish, Polish, and Ukrainian, and, since the 1960s, a thriving arts community (an art gallery in the basement features shows by local artists). A major renovation of the branch, as part of the Library's Adopt-A-Branch program, was completed in 1996.

It might have been a nice experience considering that it is clean and there is air conditioning. But there were almost no dr. Seuss books, and apparently I really offended a woman in the children's department. She deadass looked at me in the face like I was stupid and speaking to me was beneath her for asking where the restroom was. I returned her attitude with kindness, but that sucked. I know bathrooms in the city are rare, but yeesh! I'm still a human.
Nice place to sit and study. Only downside is that there's no restroom. You'd have to use the porta potty in the park across the street.
There are no public restrooms at this location. NYC Life & Tourist Hack: all Trader Joe's locations have public bathrooms.
Tompkins Square Library will be closed from April 24 through early July 2023 for renovation.
The space is small compared to other New York Public Library locations in the city and the collection as well as the staff is not too diverse. I guess this would be acceptable if you live in the area and are looking for a quiet place to read or work. We came here recently for an event and they did allow us to use the restroom at the basement, although it took some asking around and plenty of attitude from the people we asked before we finally found it.
No bathrooms, your responsibility to know ahead of time - This is a great library, no question. But why is there no bathroom? These are children and they have small bladders, it's just not realistic. Kids are allowed to eat and drink here, which means they're going to need the facilities. What's worse, the security guard only offers, "it's been on our website for years," a reminder that it's the responsibility of the parent to research and be prepared. Instead, I took my kid down the street to a quiet coffee shop and did homework for a couple hours just fine. The NYPL has suffered cuts and closures in the last 10 years+, if they want more support it would help if they provided better service in every way they can.
There is no restroom.. I wanted to stay here to study but no restroom is kind of inconvenient.
This branch is pretty quiet. It has a large collection of books that you can pick up off the shelves and don't necessarily need to preorder a book. It also has a large collection of children books and DVDs. Residing only on one floor, this branch has one reading room and a set of computers. They always keeps the books your ordered online for 10 days in advance, and it's easy to find the books reserved for you. You can also bring your laptop here if you want to do your homework in a quiet atmosphere.
As a frequenter of various NYPL locations over my years I feel that this location has by far the best staff, especially Alyona Glushchenkova who is always the brightest spot on my day. She has such a positive light and goes above and beyond simple circulation duties by recommending art exhibits, films, books, library programs, etc. On the times I visit and she is not there my experience is not the same. So thankful for her energy and this location.
The Tompkins Square NYPL branch is my local library and I love it! Although I pass by the Ottendorfer branch on 2nd Avenue every day, I elect to come to this branch because there's more of a neighborhood feel. There are three floors, the librarians are very friendly and helpful, and of course there's space to do work on your laptop. On Mondays and Wednesdays, they are open until 7.
