Tournament Park

Description

Tournament Park is a park and athletics venue in Pasadena, California, currently maintained by the California Institute of Technology. It was simply known as the "town lot" before being renamed Tournament Park in 1900. Tournament Park gets its name from the Tournament of Roses, and it served as a venue in the early 20th century for events associated with the Tournament, such as chariot races, ostrich races, and even a race between a camel and an elephant. It is best known for being the site of the first Rose Bowl Game in 1902, and the second to eighth Rose Bowl Games from 1916 to 1922 before the Rose Bowl opened in 1923. Its capacity at the time was 43,000 people, many of which were in temporary wooden bleachers that the city deemed unsafe, thus necessitating the construction of the Rose Bowl. Besides hosting Tournament of Roses events, the venue also hosted the Southern California Horse Show Association's annual horse show in the early 20th century. Tournament Park hosted a handful of USC football games in the 1910s and 1920s prior to the construction of Los Angeles Memorial ColiseumFollowing the departure of the Rose Bowl Game, the facility's capacity was reduced substantially. Tournament Park, along with the Rose Bowl, served as the venue for Caltech's football team until the school dropped football. The stadium, now known as South Athletic Field, is bounded by the Fox-Stanton Track (named after former Caltech football coach Fox Stanton), and continues to serve as Caltech's track and field venue. The surrounding park, which continues under the Tournament Park moniker, contains a playground and picnic facility.

Very nice secluded park. It does have a very small playground but good for small children. It is a sand playground, so definitely watch the kids as some of the area can be slippery with the sand. Lots of tables for families to have picnics or lunch and lots of shade.
Nice clean SAND park for little ones. It has bbq grills and picnic tables. It feels so private and well kept. I like the fact that it has big trees and making shades for the playground.
This one day, it was open. We've waited for two years to peek inside. It was clean, and nobody was there. Park offers loads of tables, grill spots, and a law area. Playground is okay.
Hidden Park, safe for young children. Well maintained restrooms and grounds
A small park around Caltech. There are some kid facilities and BBQ table. Although it’s belong to Caltech, it opens to everyone. This is holy place to play Pokémon go. Two poke stop and one poke gym here. Lots of Pokémon generated in this place.
Fun little out of three way park hidden within CalTech. It has two separate picnic gathering areas with one being under lots of tree coverage and perfect for summer. Includes small jungle gym area for small children and lots of sidewalks to ride bikes and scooters. Bathroom facility is nice and clean.
Lots of weird people hangout in this park. Some groups come just to smoke weed. Some others let their dogs run around with no leash and pee and/or poo in sand pit where children play. Otherwise it's a very nice park. But I wouldn't recommend it to people with young children.
I wouldn't say you should go out of your way to go to this playground. It's fine if you're nearby and your kids wants to run around a bit, or you're waiting for a Beavers' track event not a good view of the action here. There are grills and tables.
Can get busy at times given its location, but nice to have such a large park in between the city. Great for hiking, biking, or views overlooking parts of LA
Really nice sandy playground with large grassy areas surrounded by a safe perimeter. Perfect for children to play.
