The West Hartford Police Department is one of the largest municipal police departments in the State of Connecticut. With an authorized strength of 131 sworn and more than 20 full-time civilian employees, the department is organized into three main divisions: Patrol Services, Investigative Services and Support Services. Significant opportunities for professional growth and career advancement exist within that structure: approximately one-third of all patrol officer positions are eligible for divisional transfers to specialized assignments; about one-third of all positions are eligible for promotions to positions ranging from Detective to Chief of Police.

The Police Department's primary goals are:
To provide prompt and professional response to medical emergencies, vehicular accidents or crimes reported in West Hartford.
To work in cooperation with residents, business owners, interest groups and other town agencies to maintain the high standards for which this community is known.
To further the professionalism of law enforcement as a whole.
To deliver a high level of service in the most cost efficient manner possible.
To maintain the perception of safety among residents and visitors to the Town.
