To start with hands down best saltwater fish store within 100 miles. The place is a little small but trust me you don't even notice the second you walk in the door and see all the great coral and quality equipment. The owners and staff are awesome!!! Even when busy trying to keep everything clean and clear the tanks are super clean they will always stop to answer a question or just help you out. I highly recommend this place to any coral lover new or experienced. These are a few goniopora I picked up last week getting use to my tank.
Honestly I really used to love Triton. I went there back when they were at their old location and loved the change when they opened up in a new store. But it has definitely declined. A lot. Half the tanks are empty and dirty. The quality vs the price is just not there. I would rather drive to Blue Fish which is further but I know if I have questions someone can help me out or get me the right associate. At Triton, I just don’t think they have the no-how anymore since a few employees changed over. Regarding the attached images, I have a small nano cube tank, only 32 gallons. I had never seen one of these cute little cat fish before and asked the guy at Triton if it would be okay in my tank and if it’s reef compatible with the few fish and softies I have. Turns out after I got home and found it being aggressive, Triton has ill informed me. It was a coral cat and they shouldn’t be alone and can grow up to 2 feet long. That’s just one example. It was a learning experience for me that I need to do my own research and not blindly trust my LFS. But honestly, if you are looking for healthy fish and reasonably priced corals, this probably isn’t the best place anymore. I went there last week to get water and this two day experience is what really broke the deal for me on going back again - I drove all the way there, 20 min each way, and the door says open till 7. But apparently their hours are only 12-4. So the door is wrong. Drove back the next day to get some water and the kid working there wasn’t wearing a mask and definitely wasn’t following the social distancing guidelines. Sorry but I believe in wearing masks as a public health issue and employees are required. There was nothing to indicate they are following the county mandate to wear masks. He had a bored attitude that’s not a deal breaker, just a comment. They had several tanks with fish clearly diseased that were up for sale and most of the other tanks are now empty. I thought to myself, this just isn’t even a fun experience coming here anymore. It’s sad. So with that, I am going to be taking my service to Blue Fish from now on and not go back to Triton.
I never feel good about leaving negative reviews especially for small businesses, but in this case, I feel it is more than justified. Anyone who enjoys marine fish keeping and supports LFS local fish store over big-box retailers will understand why this review is so troubling. Small businesses are increasingly frustrated that they lose market share to large corporations while simultaneously refusing to offer even basic courtesies to their customers who will immediately go to the retailer that ingrains customer service into their employees. Triton Marine Aquaculture Triton is essentially no exception. Joel and his wife own the company, and both have a near encyclopedic knowledge of their trade. Unfortunately, to extract any information of them comes with eye rolls and passive-aggressive childish behavior even in front of my 10-year-old daughter. Both of them have a fairly menacing appearance being sleeved in tattoos and currently Joel has blue hair which is ridiculous on a grown man. Notwithstanding that, I am not there to be his fashion consultant or his friend. I am a customer and expect to be treated with a certain degree of courtesy and respect. I tolerate their sophomoric behavior because I know that they are a couple of West Coast hipsters basically think they are better than us bumpkin. Moreover, believe me, they treat you that way. My complaint is not about their store which is nice, clean, and well lit. Or even its inventory, which is extraordinary considering the alternative. It is the people that run it who are the problem. I have been supporting the store since they opened taking my young daughter in to show her the fish and we always leave buying something which adds up to several hundred dollars worth of fish all of which have died. I do not need a lecture about tank maintenance, I have been keeping tanks for over 20 years. I use only professional equipment perform regular water changes as well as check the chemistry in the water which is flawless every time. As a matter of fact, there are two big-box retailers that contact me directly to rescue fish when they are dropped off at the store. Suffice to say, I know more than the average person about keeping fish. This past week I purchased a trigger and some miscellaneous other items from Joel and the fish lived for less than 12 hours. This is the second trigger to die that they have sold me yet all of the fish in my tank are healthy and thriving. Call the store the next day when they open at noon and offered to bring the fish back with some water and said that if there was something wrong with my water I would accept the loss however I would like them to replace the fish otherwise. The woman was flabbergasted, literally talk to me like I was an idiot for even suggesting that they would take back the dead fish. Yes, I expect you to take back the fish that died less than 12 hours after you sold it to me. Especially, if I can prove that it was not my water quality that killed the fish. She told me that they’re basically the only game in town and that this policy is not uncommon. I don’t buy anything without a warranty of some kind, but I expect even if this is their policy that be clearly marked in the store and not just some phantom rule that I should know about. She told me it’s on the receipt, you know the receipt that they give you after the purchase. The egregious part is that she told me “oh yeah, you bought that from the quarantine section of the store”. What the heck is that? Quarantine? There certainly no signs that say I’m buying potentially sick fish… Maybe these guys will survive in business maybe they won’t but I can guarantee you it will never be with another dollar of my money. What really bothered me was left Joel’s wife with my number and asked for her to explain the circumstances. To give me a call if they would be willing to work with me considering the fish died just hours after I got it. It’s been 48 hours and no call. They clearly don’t care about losing my business and they won’t care about losing yours given the same circumstances.
Triton Marine was amazing. Someone recommended this store to me. I was truly blown away when I walked in. I am very new to a saltwater tank. I purchase a 150 gallon tank from another store but to be honest its just not like this store. I am not bad mouthing the other store but Marine absolutely stands out to me. The different variety of fish and coral is amazing. Joel helped me with all my questions. This store is the cleanest and well kept store I have been in. As of now Joel has all my business.
My daughter and I expected our experience to go a completely different way. We spent 15 minutes looking around and during that time the person there said 6 words to us, he was too busy uploading and taking pictures of other coral. Worst customer service and this is was the first and last time here. To think I've spent thousands on my tank and expected to spend hundreds today. Off to Blue Fish!!! They like my money. Response to the owner: Customer service and customer experience is and should be of the utmost importance to you as a shop owner. Tidal gardens was amazing and after leaving my review for blue fish the customer service has been amazing also. Maybe this review will help you get better as well.
Very nice store. Tanks seem very well kept and large selection of corals. Only thing keeping me from 5 star is I felt very profiled by employee. He did answer my questions but made me feel like my pockets weren't deep enough for the store. I also felt the prices seemed about 25% higher than other comparable livestock found at other saltwater exclusive stores.
Beautiful store clean with a great selection and an efficient attentive staff. If you are a marine fish lover this is a great find. This is a specialty store so no freshwater fish and that is great as you dont have to wander around looking for a tiny saltwater section. Prices are appropriate. I would give 5 stars but they have very few 5 and 10 dollar frags. A tank or two of cheaper fast easy growing frags would be great for those new to the hobby.
I was really excited to check out this store the way people raved about it saying how awesome it is. It does look like it was once a great place but the state of the tanks in the entire mid-section when we arrived was disappointing. On the positive side, the livestock for the most part looks healthy, but there were dead fish left in tanks along with high amounts of aiptasia in all of the sale tanks and filtration systems. The seahorse tank looks amazing and the seahorses seem to be doing very well which is a testimony to good care. Pricing on fish was somewhat fair, but the prices of coral and frags here are very high and a lot of them also come with aiptasia. It can certainly be a challenge these days to run an aquarium store and keep up with everything, and thus I am happy to change my rating if things improve.
My husband and I have been patrons of Triton since they opened and we have had nothing less than an incredible experience every time. Joel and Jen's knowledge of the saltwater hobby is second to none and their willingness to go above and beyond to assist their customers is what keeps us coming back. Their honesty and ideas have helped us create a beautiful 180 gallon reef tank in our home and we do not hesitate to recommend them to family and friends. They are up front and will give you the best advice even if it's not what you want to hear. They take care to quarantine all new livestock, will not sell you anything they wouldn't put in their own personal tank and we have never had any issues with livestock purchased from them. Experienced hobbiests and novices alike should strongly consider supporting their business.
I always check out local fish stores when I'm traveling and this store has to be in my Top 5! Clean tanks; healthy fish; good selection and reasonable prices. Joel was very helpful and even engaged in conversation with my 4-year old son. Would definitely recommend this store and plan to be back the next time I'm in Ohio!
