U.S. Budokai Karate of Clifton Park

About

US Budokai Karate is a traditional martial arts school in Clifton Park that teaches respect, self-discipline, and responsibility in a fun, energetic way!

Description

Karate training at the U.S. Budokai Karate Association will help teach respect, self-discipline, and responsibility, as well as condition the body and teach self-defense. Many people begin training in Budokai Karate for a wide variety of reasons. However, the overriding goal of our Karate School is to help each person become a better and more well-rounded person, both inside and outside the dojo (training hall).

Our goal in Budokai Karate is to develop character, spirit, and a strong, positive attitude, using as much traditional Japanese theory as possible. Our goals are to bring people together from all different walks of life, teach them to respect each other and themselves, and to have a caring and loving feeling for their fellow man. We strive to build strong minds and bodies, which leads to the growth of self-esteem. With all of these concepts in mind, this can only have one outcome and that outcome is to bring us closer to peace, first on an individual level and eventually on a global level.

Amazing martial arts school- we previously tried Clifton Park Pai’s TKD and although the presentation was good my 9 year old boy grew tired of it quickly- it was too loud for him and not enough moving around and the classes were huge and the instructors were not as helpful by comparison. Then we came to US budokai— my son loves it here as do I — there At least now is no contract Pais I had to sign a 6 month contract and even after I cancelled had to pay off 3 additional months for canceling early and the rate as of now is 150 a month for 3 classes a week with a variety of different times to choose from— Pais didn’t have as many options for times during the week that beginners could participate in and they were more expensive at 169 a month. My son is a multi sport athlete doing hockey and lacrosse so a flexible schedule with multiple times to attend is very important to us. My son said he likes it because it’s not as loud and you get to live around more as opposed to waiting in line to do a certain move. The layout the way each student has a wave master punching/kicking bag they use also the student creed — my son already knows how to count to 10 in Japanese and he just started about a month ago. They also have sparring gear that you buy when or soon after you sign up_ the moves and self defense he is learning seems to be a lot more helpful in possible real world conflict type situations if my son had to defend himself. Also they are patient which I love— my son has ADHD and dyslexia and can be quite wobbly when doing moves— they are showing him the importance of correct form in a nice gentle way— he is already improving. He has already stuck with US Budokai longer than his short time at Pais. He already told me he wants to earn his. Lack belt with US budokai. Love it here highly recommend checking it out Osu!
Both of my children started with US Budokai of Clifton Park as preschoolers in their Tiny Tigers program. After years of watching them, I joined myself as an adult. I cannot say enough positive things about this school! From the instructors to the fellow members, we were all welcomed into this family atmosphere. For me personally, it is the most challenging thing I have ever done for myself-both physically and mentally, and one of the most enjoyable. I look forward to my classes each week and can’t imagine not being part of this amazing dojo!
I’ve been in Karate classes since I was three, and what I really love about the dojo is that whether you are taking in person or zoom classes you’re really part of a community there. I have met so many of my friends at Karate- possibly more than I’ve met at school. Even when you’re on zoom the instructors will crack jokes with you and demonstrate things, and it feels like you’re there. All the instructors are awesome and they make it fun to learn the material.
I have been practicing at Budokai Karate since I was in Kindergarden, and am currently a second-degree black belt nidan. I have even participated in multiple Karate tournaments, and have had plenty of fun demonstrating my katas and sparring. I have always felt like part of a community and a family in my time here, and everyone is friendly and supportive. I know that I am more confident and disciplined as a result of my participation. During the pandemic, when the world seemed to have turned upside-down, the virtual karate classes brought a sense of normalcy into my life. I have never questioned my decision to start, and I don't believe I will ever quit. This place is excellent!
We looked at MANY different potential martial arts programs for our child. From the first meeting with Renshi Sue it was clear this place was different. You don't want the programs SO easy that they don't learn the actual art or develop the discipline, not SO hard they lose interest. This program hits the perfect balance. Hanshi Jarem Is TOUGH on them yet also tender and funny. Knows every kid. They seek his praise and follow his guidance. This has been terrific for our son, who is a sensory seeker, and while he's only been here since very end of April, I see improvement like I've never seen in anything else. There is, like everywhere else, the occasional kid who "expects" to up rank despite not doing the work. Every other dojo I've seen gives rank so they can keep parents $$$; not so here. Child's development first, period. There was this one time where it was was probably the first time this child ever heard no, and while your heart breaks a little with their tears it was handled with dignity in private, but you could tell on his face later, you also know that it's probably one of the best things to happen to him. False self esteem without the work is actually highly damaging to kids, leading to depression and anxiety as young adults. Letting kids take some lumps is hard. Lots of dojos talk about character, but don't actually follow through. Here, they do. VERY compassionately, but firm. Guess who does the work now and has a new spring in his step? It's great to see. Even when there are huge classes there are always enough teachers, and they break it up into same-level groups. The first time I heard my son count to 10 in Japanese in front of the class I shot up in my seat like "when the heck did he learn that?!". I'm continually amazed at the program, but even more so at the people. I don't have the words to do them justice. You need to just try it. I think they do 2 1:1 classes to try it/see if it works for everyone. We are grateful for this influence. I'd rather cut out lunches for dad and I than cut this from our budget.
This place is so GREAT! I cannot say enough good things. Their always there to answer questions and take time to listen. The scheduling is so flexible u can cancel if something comes up and reschedule for a day you can get in. They have an app now so it’s so easy to see when your classes are booked and what’s coming up. My 8 year old was shy, timid and didn’t get out much. Now she’s outgoing, feels proud of what she’s accomplished and loves to do her exercises. This place teaches kids patience, looking people in eye and talking to them, respect, sense of pride and so much more. Sign up you will not regret it!!!
I’ve been training here since late November of 2014, so it’s been a while, but the past six years and something months have been great. I earned my black belt a few years ago and I really enjoy it. The teachers are outstanding and even though karate is challenging, they make it tons of fun. I’ve made many good friends. Hanshi Jarem, Renshi Sue, and Sensei Michael are truly some of the best people I know. They care so, so much about their students. I’ve walked into the building just thinking to myself “ugh I wish I was on the couch watching tv”, but then class starts and my mood just changes so drastically- I’m smiling and having so much fun. Everyone there is like family. We all try to help each other when we forget the next move to a kata or which self defense is what. If you are interested in learning karate, I highly recommend to come here. It’s the best :
