Our mission is to advance the health, welfare, performance and veterinary care of horses through research and education. We accomplish this by providing academic leadership and by serving as the organizational umbrella under which equine research is funded and conducted at UC Davis. We bring together research facilities, students, veterinary residents and researchers, and veterinarians to tackle important problems affecting the health of horses.
The findings of studies conducted by CEH researchers are applied directly to equine patients of the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, allowing continuous improvements to be made in the standard of veterinary care. In addition, the CEH plays an important role in the training of future veterinarians, academic clinicians and researchers by providing invaluable hands-on learning opportunities to undergraduate veterinary students, residents and graduate students.
Through these research and educational efforts, the faculty and staff of the CEH continually strive to provide new information and improved diagnostic and therapeutic options to benefit the owners of California's large and diverse horse population.
The CEH is part of the School of Veterinary Medicine, but it is supported almost entirely by private contributions from foundations and horse-loving individuals, horse-related organizations, breed clubs and racing associations. Additional funding is also generated by the California horse-racing industry through a small percentage of satellite wagering funds earmarked for equine research.
These funds are applied directly to research that contributes to the health and well-being of horses:
• Development of new technologies such as regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy for the care and treatment of horses
• Development in areas that apply directly to the care and treatment of patients at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital
• Training of equine specialists for board-certification
• Fellowships to support training of academic and research scientists
• Scholarships for equine-oriented veterinary students
• Publication of a broad array of educational materials for the general public and for veterinary professionals
• Classes in continuing education for practicing veterinarians and educational seminars for the general public.
The health of horses, like that of humans, depends on continuous advancements in medical research. If you would like to help support the CEH in its efforts to benefit horses, please visit our website for information on giving: http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/ceh/giving.cfm
