Umatilla National Forest

Description

The Umatilla National Forest, in the Blue Mountains of northeast Oregon and southeast Washington, covers an area of 1.4 million acres (5,700 km2). In descending order of land area the forest is located in parts of Umatilla, Grant, Columbia, Morrow, Wallowa, Union, Garfield, Asotin, Wheeler, and Walla Walla counties. (Columbia, Garfield, Asotin, and Walla Walla counties are in Washington, while the rest are in Oregon.) More than three-quarters of the forest lies in the state of Oregon. Forest headquarters are located in Pendleton, Oregon. There are local ranger district offices in Heppner and Ukiah in Oregon, and in Pomeroy and Walla Walla in Washington.Human historyThe Umatilla National Forest takes its name from the Umatilla Indian word meaning "water rippling over sand." Explorers Lewis and Clark passed through the area in 1805 on the Columbia River, and Marcus and Narcissa Whitman passed through in 1836 to establish a mission at Wailatpu near Walla Walla, Washington. Thousands of emigrants later followed the Oregon Trail west, and many remained in the Blue Mountain region. Discovery of gold in Oregon in 1851 led to the settlement of the North Fork John Day River area. More than $10 million in gold and silver were mined, and remnants of the era are still visible in the National Forest. Some claims are still being mined.

Umatilla Forest is one of my favorite places to hike. I highly suggest you take any opportunity you can to hike any trail. The views are spectacular and the trails are well maintained.
Absolutely beautiful and peaceful!Lots of places to explore! There are Deer,Elk,wild Turkeys,Grouse...etc..Penland lake is close by and a great place to camp Dog-friendliness: Dogs love the outdoors!!
It's a drive from Portland metro, but if you're looking for open space in late spring and early summer It's a great way to decompress. Overnight camping will split up the drive. Try bull prairie campground and explore from there.
I love the Umatilla National Forest, just got back from a four-day camp out, just off of the Olive Lake Road past Dale Oregon. The timber is so beautiful and thick up there and I had good access to the creek , there are several campgrounds on that road to Olive Lake, all are a good choice.
Hiked the first snow of the season over the weekend. It was beautiful and peaceful. Well worth the drive.
this National forest is amazing. while there we got lots of weather and good camping areas
This was such a great place to go to spend Labor Day. We had so much fun relaxing on the water, hiking and riding around on the side by side. I would go back here anytime again. Such a beautiful area and we literally had absolutely no cell phone service so that was even better.
This review is for the Tucannon River trail. Any day spent outside is a great day, even in 105° temperatures. This hike was a bit cooler, being near the Tucannon River, but, as much of the way is still exposed, it was hot. Plenty of places along the way to cool one's heels, though. This is a walk in the woods and well worth it. Solitude is assured and wildlife abound. Deer and wild turkeys were encountered as were an incredible number of butterflies. Some nice campsites along the way. Blueberries ripe though a tad tart. Be forewarned on the drive there: once you reach the fork the road is incredibly rough and rocky.
What a wonderful place! Umatilla National Forest is amazing! Jubilee Lake Campground is wonderful. Amazing ridgetop praries ? meadows ?. The highway from Tollgate to Elgin was fantastic! Go to UNF, you won't be disappointed. Great little store in Tollgate and on the east, Elgin is a neat little town with a great feel and super friendly people!
I grew up running around in the Umatilla national forest! Spent a lot of time with my now deceased parents there. One of my favorite places on earth. Lots to do and see, hike, hunt, ride horses, swim, canoe, four wheel.... you’re only limited by your imagination
