I really enjoyed some of the exhibits. Some of the displays were not well marked, so I was guessing as to what they were. Also the descriptions on the wall are rather dated, with a little too much text and tiny fonts. But overall we enjoyed ourselves. I do wish the museum hours were less restrictive. Being closed on Sunday is especially odd, considering how many visitors would visit more.
The University museum is one of the features that sold me on SIU. What an amazing opportunity for every department to have the opportunity to display, facilitate, and learn from everything that an on-site museum offers. Proud and thrilled that the university museum is back on campus and is here to stay.
This is a great museum of primarily southern Illinois history. Not an overly large space but the creative and inspired work of curated displays means that this museum does not suffer from cramped surroundings due to trying to display too much of their collections. If you will be visiting check out the North hall's Swedlund photography including pics from the region. They are incredible. Artwork from the Depression era can be found in the South hall. Allow yourself enough time to get through both halls. You won't be disappointed.
What a very special place to visit here in Carbondale!! It's the entire building of fanner that is at first awesome and inspiring.then the actual art inside of the place. From time to time I like to take a visit to the museum and stay for a few hours relaxing and just taking it all in. The building of fanner is almost a world wonder.the amount of education and learning is a gift from the universe!!!!Great place for alone time or for being in a room full of people. It's a sure to please experience EVERY TIME. I HOPE MY GREAT GREAT GRABD KIDS AREE BL EESSED WITH TTHE ABILITY TO TAJE ADVANTAGE OF ALL THAT SIU gas to offer !!!!!!
I can always expect to see a wide variety of well curated exhibits at the museum. I have seen everything from local and regional historical exhibits to art exhibits that range from MFA thesis shows to nationally noted artists. The museum is a great link between SIU and the community of Carbondale and the surrounding region.
