*What is Aikido?*
Aikido is a Japanese martial art founded by Morihei Ueshiba in the early part of the 20th century. Aikido's emphasis is on unbalancing and redirecting an opponent's energy to neutralize an attack. The goal is to efficiently subdue and control an attacker or to create an opportunity to safely escape. It incorporates joint-lock and throwing techniques.
*Aikido at the University of Ottawa*
The style practised at the University of Ottawa, Yoseikan aikido, was founded by Minoru Mochizuki, a student of Morihei Ueshiba. Yoseikan Aikido is a composite system that includes, in addition to aikido techniques, elements of Karate-do and Judo in order to provide a comprehensive training program. In North America, this program is under the technical direction of Patrick Augé Sensei. The techniques are executed empty-handed or with weapons.
Women and men of all ages study Aikido. Emphasis is placed on encouraging students to find their physical and mental limits and to reach beyond them. Mutual respect allows all participants to advance at their own pace. Classes are taught by teachers of black belt rank who have been certified by the International Yoseikan Budo Federation (IYBF) and who continue to practice regularly to improve their skills. Students experience highly interactive classes, where they work in pairs or in groups. Classes are held in the Combat room at Sports Services in Montpetit Hall. Anyone interested in learning more is invited to come observe a class.
