I love the staff: young dentists and instructors. The facility is clean, welcoming, well equipped and with a kindness to patients focus. Appreciate my time there despite the temporary discomforts. Question: Do you supply pillows? The dental exam chairs can get quite uncomfortable during the long appointments.
I got through emergency line today. After filling papers it took an hour to be seen by a student -doctor. She was quite nice, gentle, attentive. She would check her evaluations with supervisor and answered all my questions; I had many of them. The only thing that is upsetting is that there is a long waiting list and I’m afraid my pain will kill me before I see a doctor. They offered to call me if someone’ cancels
The students and the effort they put into their work actually deserve 5 stars. They study hard, have great customer service skills, and really do great work. It's a school, people know this ahead of time and SHOULD expect procedures to take much longer than usual. You accept that because you're helping people learn to be professionals and it takes time. I started using UofP years ago because I actually wanted to consider this my chance to "give back" to my community--volunteering myself to endure possibly serious amounts of pain so others would not have to. Then I took a break for a few years and started going back again about 2 months ago. After just 2 visits, I quit going and I won't be going back. Not because of the facility amazing, high-tech place, expensive of course or the care. I started using UofP this time because I had been dealing with BlueShield dentists the last couple years. To me it seems they have a bad habit of recommending unnecessary work for profit reasons. My most recent BlueShield dentist lied to me while I was in the middle of an emergency crown procedure. She told me that my insurance no longer covered ceramic crowns and that I would have to buy the "Zirconia" instead. This would cost me $3,000.00 for 2 instead of the $600.00 I was expecting. As a fool, I actually took her word for it stupid to trust a medical professional to tell the truth right?. I believed her so much, I didn't even confirm her statement until a month later, after spending $3,000. Back to UofP... While I was sitting in the chair waiting for my student dentist to begin his evaluation, I had this very conversation with an instructor, explaining why I left my previous dentist. She was kind, professional, obviously a full time dentist for many years and very successful it would seem both hands covered with many diamonds and other stones -- 1st Red Flag for me. She commented that she would have done the EXACT SAME THING my ex-dentist had done. Not that she would have lied per se, but that she would have refused to install porcelain crowns because there isn't enough profit in it--2nd Red Flag. She says she would have to pay for certain procedures not covered by insurance, so to compensate she would only allow Zirconia crowns--3rd Red Flag. And now I'm out of this place. Realizing what type of dentist she is, with the knowledge she is one of the instructors who will be overseeing my student dentist, I KNOW I will be getting unnecessary procedures performed on me. I'm done. I don't go to a regular dentist to help them become a millionaire, I go to them because I need treatment that is hopefully covered mostly by insurance. If you can't run your business in a way that's profitable, and you have to resort to manipulating your patients like some 1980's used-car dealership, you need to stop doing business. It's unfortunate that dentistry is treated as a "luxury/unnecessary procedure" and is not properly regulated. How gross it is that I cannot trust a SINGLE DENTIST in San Francisco to tell me honestly whether or not I need a procedure perforned. After all, I just heard FROM ONE OF THEIR OWN INSTRUCTORS that 'profit comes before patients', and I KNOW she's passing this mentality along to her students or atleast attempting to. She is spreading the disease at the very source---the classroom full of impressionable students who mistakenly look to her for guidance. Average tuition at UofP is $121,000.00. An average-to-good novice dentist should be able to cover that comfortably in less than 10 years without resorting to lying and manipulating. I hope her good students realize this and do not assume her attitude when they graduate. There's nothing wrong with being successful and trying to make stacks of cash in the process, but making good money because YOU'RE GOOD feels better than making good money because you're a good liar.
The students and medical professionals deserve 5 stars, but the business practices deserve 1 star. I had a small mass removed from my jaw by a nearby oral surgeon and sent for pathology at UOP just to make sure it wasn't oral cancer. Despite having a really great insurance plan UoP turned out not to be covered. It was my fault for not checking the coverage of pathologist my surgeon had chosen beforehand, however what got me was that UoP just farmed the bill out immediately to a third party billing agency and they could not be reasoned with, were aggressive, and in the end refused to offer even a slight adjustment that is commonplace e.g. UCSF will do 40% off for lack of insurance if you ask. My mom is a dentist and got her DDS at UoP School of Dentistry and was upset that her alma mater had gone down this route over the years. If you do choose to get medical care here, you must be 100% dialed on your insurance situation and the costs, as other reviews have mentioned. It can end up being more hassle than a private dentistry practice, and I hate to think of people letting themselves be taught on thinking they will get a deal in return, only to get hit with a higher bill for whatever issue.
Clinic went downhill the last 2-3 years! Plan for every appointment to take 3 hours! The cleaning will often be a second appointment. A long procedure like an implant that takes private dentists about 9 months, took 2 years, and they STILL couldn't get the implant crown right. I had to go to a private to dentist who did the crown in less than 1 month! It takes their lab at least 5 weeks to make crowns that may not fit and have to be made again with new impressions. It's great that they have all specialists needed for implants: oral surgery, periodontics, and Endo and Surgery departments have residents so are great if the Clinic will refer you and your Clinic student shows up. And all check ups and x-rays and must be done serially before you can move to the next appointment. It can also be difficult getting into the clinic for an emergency. Many male faculty are condescending to women and don't supervise. Rotating clinic faculty means that no one follows case progress or problems.
The person at the front desk was rude and disrespectful person ..he was black mel.he refused to tell me his name.. I'm going to make a complaint about his attitude..I had my tooth pulled out before inside that building now I have bad infection all over my gum .. All my teeth now are loose I can't eat for the last 3 months today they refunded to let me in and I had an appointment.. because they front desk person I'm going to follow lawsuit against the business of this building ..
I have been coming to receive dental work at University of the Pacific dental for five years now. I have received the best of care. Yes, the appointments take longer because the dental students are learning. However, you have double the examination since their work is being checked by expert dentist professors. I have received cleanings, root canals, implants, and a false tooth here. Highly recommend.
The best, and nicest people work here! State of the art dental facility, highly attentive staff, experienced veterans on every floor, highly recommended, the wait may take a little longer than other Medicare services, but it's worth it. My visits here are a real pleasure, and NO ONE says that about dentists!
I commute 200 miles to get to you 0P in San Francisco for my dental treatment. I believe the best treatment is possible here because you are dealing with dentists that have been in the business and are retired or partially retired and you are dealing with a new student at the same time They have meetings about your does your help with your teeth and what is best for you you are in charge the entire time and they supervise and tell you what is possible. I am in my 70s and it is worth the trip for me to come over 100 miles
My grandson was served so well there. He had too many teeth and they were so crowded we needed help. Over the months of dentistry work done they came out perfect. I sent a woman whose life needed turning around. She had no teeth and so her chances for work were slim. They did such a beautiful job her life was truly changed!. It's all in the smile where our first judgements come from others. Thanks is all we can give you for the great work these aspiring dentists do! What a great program all around. Therese Spears
