USS ALBACORE

Description

USS Albacore was a unique research submarine that pioneered the American version of the teardrop hull form of modern submarines. The revolutionary design was derived from extensive hydrodynamic and wind tunnel testing, with an emphasis on underwater speed and maneuverability. She was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named for the albacore, a small tuna found in temperate seas throughout the world. Her keel was laid down on 15 March 1952 by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard of Kittery, Maine. She was launched on 1 August 1953, sponsored by Mrs. J.E. Jowers, the widow of Chief Motor Machinist's Mate Arthur L. Stanton, lost with the second Albacore , and commissioned on 6 December 1953 with Lieutenant Commander Kenneth C. Gummerson in command. The effectiveness of submarines in World War II convinced both the Soviets and the United States Navy that undersea warfare would play an even more important role in coming conflicts and dictated development of superior submarines. The advent of nuclear power nourished the hope that such warships could be produced. The effort to achieve this goal involved the development of a nuclear propulsion system and the design of a streamlined submarine hull capable of optimum submerged performance.

This was an amazing museum. The family had been to many navel ship museums and this is our first submarine. With me being 6'3" tall it really shows myself and the family how tight spaces are and were for people on subs. They also had another ship sitting in the parking lot. Too bad we couldn't climb through it. The memorial park at the opposite end of the museum was nice. Hope to find and explore more submarine museums on our travels. Nachos.....
This was a great and fascinating part of history. We loved exploring this and learning about not only the USS Albacore but many other subs as well. This was kid friendly and they had a gift shop. We went on a rainy day and it was really nice to have not only myself but the kids learn about a part of their state!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$16–20
This is a must-do place to visit even if you are simply driving through Portsmouth, NH! Well preserved piece of U.S. Naval history! We were on our way up to Maine from Massachusetts and decided to take a two hour break so we grabbed a ticket and spent about an hour walking through the submarine learning about it's specific contributions to U.S. Naval submarine dominance. The people running the place are super nice and helpful!
Wow, so much fun, and we were two adults visiting. I bet kids will enjoy even more! You can interact and touch some of the equipment which makes it so much more interesting! Everything is so tight and small, you might feel a bit suffocating at times, so if you don't like small spaces I'd avoid.
Such as a great place to visit, especially with the family. The staff are all very friendly and the gentlemen in the gift shop area are extremely knowledgeable! On very hot summer days the museum may be closed so call ahead!
Reasonably priced and excellent for kids and adults alike. Walking through the submarine was a great way to learn the history of the vessel. The working periscope in the main shop area was really cool as well.
What a fun piece of history! I took my 67 use old father and we loved it. Hearing the submariners tell their stories on the guided tour was helpful, informative and interesting. Highly recommend!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot surePrice for adult entry$6–10
We spent a couple hour exploring the submarine and Museum! My young boys just loved seeing the bunks, controls and learning the history!! They also liked seeing the Ghost prototype!! So cool!!
Watch your head! This is a self-guided tour through the USS Albacore. As you walk through the ship, a series of audio stations highlight Albacore's unique features. Tickets can be purchased at arrival in their gift shop. Adult tickets are $9, Children 5-14 are $4.
A great small museum to learn a part of American military history. If you can find the guy with the beard, he has some great stories about his uncle who served on this submarine. We are glad we stopped by.
