Valois Cafeteria

About

The sign outside Valois might seem a little confusing at first: See Your Food, it says. But once inside this historic Hyde Park eatery, it makes perfect sense. The menu is barely needed, as the smorgasbord is laid out for all to see

Anthony Bourdain’s Chicago flick brought us here and we loved it. Great food for cafeteria style and the ambiance was the classic diner. Loved watching the cooks take orders and move people along.
This was our first time eating at Valois. I got a Ham Sandwich on a bun, my husband got the Egg White Omelette with Grits and our son ordered Grilled Whitefish, Macaroni & Cheese, and Broccoli. We want to eat there again before we leave Chicago; the food is really good. Update: We had to go back again before we left Chicago. I got a Cheeseburger and Fries, and Carrot Cake, my son, a Hamburger and my husband got the Egg White Omelette with Grits again. My husband also ordered a plate to go for dinner later; Baked Tilapia, Canned Yams, and Broccoli. Parking: We did free parking on a street and walked about 2 blocks to Valois.
Basic but decent breakfast, amazing steak sandwich. Friendly people, fast service. Cash only. Fun place to visit in former President Obama's old stomping ground of Hyde Park.Food: 4/5
Nice portions! Love the cafeteria concept. Food was diner-ish! The bisquit was interesting; it tasted like corbread w out the corn; the greek omelet was good; unfortunately, the pancake my daughter had crumbled. Loved the friendliness of the cooks! It was like an assmebly line! Prices are definitely reasonable, and folks of all walks of life and cultures were very present!
This diner is really one of the best of its kind. It’s your classic no frills eatery but with a twist: There are lots of staff on deck, and when you order, you’re shocked to get handed the meal by the time you pay at the register. With their cafeteria system of food prep and delivery, you get your delicious and nostalgic meal quick without sacrificing any quality. And given how popular this place is, it’s needed! They’re often busy serving many friendly, longtime South side residents, and that just makes the place that much better. There’s a reason that Obama said it was one of his favorite eateries!
Valois is a Chicago institution that has been around since 1921. It is located on East 53rd Street in Hyde Park and is known for its American breakfast and brunch dishes such as eggs, bacon, pancakes and omelets. Valois is also famous for being Barack Obama's favorite restaurant when he lived in Chicago. There's even a sign with his favorite menu items. Valois is a cheap and quick place to enjoy a hearty meal. However, it only accepts cash.
Came in on Saturday for delicious diner brunch. It’s cash only so make sure to bring cash, otherwise theres an atm. There’s a line and it’s like cafeteria style with tray and self-serving station. You ordered what you want at the beginning and pay at the end. The menu is long and vast so I ordered from the Obama’s favorite menu and got steak omelette + hash browns absolutely delicious. I also grab rice pudding and key lime pie for dessert but they are not my favorite not recommend. Food came up right away, simple, quick, affordable and delicious. Its crowded, hectic, and fast moving but absolutely worth it!
If you are an early bird like me and visiting Hyde Park, please visit Valois for breakfast. They do have a sign up front that says cash only. They also have a working ATM in doors. Staff treats you fair.Food: 5/5
This is the best diner I’ve probably ever eaten at. The food is phenomenal, the atmosphere is homely, and the food is prepared really fast.Food: 5/5
Don't let the cafeteria vibe fool you, the food is amazing. It tastes homemade and you get huge portions, it feels like no matter how much you eat you can always have more. Feels likes my grandmothers kitchen and I love their breakfast the most. It's cash only though so make sure to pull from the ATM before ordering. Parking: Hard to find parking so you might have to circle the block a few times to find a spot or park in the Harper street lot
