Van Damme State Park

Description

Van Damme State Park consists of about 1831acre of land in Mendocino County, California, near the town of Little River on State Route 1. It was named for Charles Van Damme (1881–1934), who was born in the area and purchased the land that is now the park with profits from a San Francisco ferry business. On his death, the property became part of the California state park system.DescriptionThe greater part of the park lies on the inland side of State Route 1 and includes ten miles of hiking trails along the Little River and campsites rated by the Guardian as one of the ten best on the West Coast. On the ocean side of the highway, a free parking lot provides access to Little River Beach at the mouth of the Little River, also part of the park. The waters offshore from the beach form the Van Damme State Marine Conservation Area. The beach also serves as the launch site for kayak tours of the sea caves in the area.Another part of the park, Spring Ranch, consists of 160acre of blufftop meadows on the ocean side of Route 1 north of Little River and a restored set of barns dating from 1860. It was purchased by the state in 1996.Inland, a boardwalked nature trail leads through a pygmy forest, where poor soil has created a marshy ecosystem of stunted cypress and pine trees and rhododendrons. There are two pygmy forested areas within Van Damme State Park. On the north border of the park is a 5acre parcel named in honor of Charlotte M. Hoak.

Campground is located in a good place if you want to be away from large groups. Lots of places to choose from with good access to the beach and ocean. Ocean side parking is available for camping too, but you have to pay at the Van Damme booth. Oceanside has 2 fire-pits, picnic benches, and bathrooms no showers. There are however showers inside the campground that were $1/5 minutes at the time of this review. If you need some town access you can pop into Mendocino or Fort Bragg. Mendo is a neat little town with many tourists and shops. Fort Bragg is a little bigger with many good breweries. There is also a great bike/walking path along the ocean all the way to McKerricher. Look at TrailForks if you want some real dirt because there are plenty of local trails to hit.
The campground is open and in good condition. The Fern Canyon trail is closed and it will be for awhile. The upper hike through the pigmy forest for awhile. You can access redwood forest from there. Dogs are not allowed on trails. The only day use is at the beach where there are picnic tables and restrooms.
Great spot, pretty busy but clean facilities and incredibly friendly parks employees. Buzz is the man! Restrooms: Very clean Dog-friendliness: There are tons of dogs. Very friendly, just keep them on a leash or lead and you'll be good to go. Picnic area: Each site has a picnic area.
Beautiful, easy hike; recent storms have wreaked havoc on the trees, resulting in fallen trees, slides and damage to bridges making them unsafe for most to cross. Once the cleanup has occurred and the park fully reopened, it will be a must-stop for many visiting the area.
Camping by the creek is dreamy. Indoor toilets, indoor showers, beautiful scenery
The park has a parking lot and bathrooms. Yes, I did start with the essential information on this review, your welcome. This beach has a lot of sand, rocks, sea shells, and drift wood. You can walk along the coast, sit on the edge of the parking lot, or sit on the tree logs in the back of the beach. The state park is divided by Hwy 1. There is a beach side and across the street is the park side. This is a nice place to collect special items, come watch the sunset, meditate, do yoga, or just relax.
WOW! Absolutely beautiful. Wooded & large but feels small & secluded. SO close to the beach but not visible from our site. #12 12 is very private even next to the restrooms. People rarely walk by. Vehicles from your site block noise & view of popular area. Restrooms are THE nicest flush toilets & tile showers I have EVER seen at a campground, just no handsoap After dinner we walked across the street to the beach & watched the sunset
Was a nice place to spend the night. People camping there seemed happy. Facilities were clean, and well equipped, the two people that I got to talk to that worked looking After the camping sites were very friendly and helpful. I really appreciate it that.
Fern canyon trail is a must! The trail goes up coast along the little river although it's more of a creek and ferns are all up the walls of the canyon and redwoods everywhere it's beautiful : Trail is 2.5 miles 1 way, and at the end you can take a loop to the pygmy forest which is an interesting guided hike. But the best part if the hike is the fern canyon hike, theres a place to park elsewhere to see the pygmy forest. If you do the whole loop it's 8 miles from start to finish, and out and back JUST the fern canyon strip out and back is 5 miles. Make sure to take a map or a picture of a map. Have fun :
If you've never visited Van Damme State Park you should! The best 12 mile hike I everr did. This park is great for hiking or taking a stroll through lush greenery, redwoods and ferns of all sizes lining the trails and up along the mountain sides. Wonderful experience and I've got to go back and try the trail from another vantage point.
