The Vancouver Bar Association was established in 1892, under the name of the Vancouver Law Association. Its goals included the improvement of statute law and rules of practice in the courts, the maintenance of social etiquette and the establishment of a law library.
In 1912, the Society was renamed the Vancouver Bar Association. The goals of the organization included the protection of interests of members of the legal profession and cooperation with other bars in B.C. Membership was open to all lawyers in the Lower Mainland.
In 1945, the Association was formally incorporated. The goals of the Association included: the advancement and protection of members of the legal profession; the development of high standards of legal education and training; the publication of papers, journals and books which promote the Association; the provision of legal services for people of the city of Vancouver. The Association's other activities included a lawyer referral service, legal assistance, continuing legal education, the publication of The Advocate and the establishment of the Lawyer's Inn.
