The Van Horn Mansion was built by Judge James Van Horn in 1823. It is the site of the Town of Newfane's first town meeting, April 6, 1824. The name for the Town of Newfane is believed to be chosen by the town Postmaster. The Mansion includes 16 rooms and five bathrooms. It is one many National Register of Historic Places in Niagara County.Judge James Van HornJudge James Van Horn was born in the state of New Jersey. James Van Horn moved north as the famous Erie Canal was being built. Van Horn settled in Newfane in 1817 with 9 children. Van Horn built a gristmill and was the first builder of a wool mill in Niagara County, New York in 1842. Van Horn became one of four of Niagara County's first judge's in 1821. In 1823, he built the brick Georgian-style Van Horn Mansion which was the first brick home in Newfane. James Van Horn was the Town of Newfane Supervisor from 1829-1831.The Mansion after the Van HornsThe last surviving Van Horn descent sold the mansion to W.H. Davis of New York City in 1910. In 1922, it was owned by Herbert Pease. Douglas Patterson of Nova Scotia, Canada, purchased the mansion in 1929 after a short ownership by the Cramer Brothers. During that time until 1938, Patterson opened a community skating rink to the residents of Newfane. In 1939, the structure suffered a fire. Mary Wagner in 1949 received the mansion and helped to renovate it for an upscale restaurant known as Green Acres. In 1959, the building was converted into apartments by John Strickland and eventually was left for vandals. The Noury Chemical Company acquired the structure and then donated it to the Newfane Historical Society in 1987. The Newfane Historical Society has maintained its splendor and value to present day. It has held Victorian teas, tours, and underwent numerous volunteer renovation programs over the years.

Our Historian guides were very knowledgeable and pleasantly explained all about the Victorian mansions structure, how it was built and maintained, all about the Van Horns, and the new owners mission to save the mansion. I am looking forward to going back again in October for their Candlelight Tour and again in December to see it all decorated in Victorian Christmas fashion!
We went for the candle tour it's was very cool and exciting definitely recommend going if your in to that stuff around Halloween! Everyone is so friendly! the story of the house and ghosts are very interesting but I actually would love to go during a normal day the house is stunningly beautiful!
Love this place. I am a 13 year old medium and this was the best ghost place I’ve ever really been to. I’ve been here 3 times in the past years and I have never been failed with the activity not to mention how gorgeous the mansion is. First time candle light tour I saw the dolls eyes in the kids room glow second time I saw a blonde woman in a long Victorian nightgown in the mirror in the attic and a little girl in the vanity mirror. I will never forget them. The third time was near Christmas. It felt normal as usual felt energies looking at us by the piano near the fire place. I had a dress on and I felt the end of it being played with. I felt someone standing behind me. A really tall person so that was scary. it was a male energy. then at the end my sister and my mother starting feeling so much pain on there backs. I felt immense pressure on my shoulders and I wanted to scream but I didn’t want to tell the tour lady that they are all so kind oh my gosh their energy’s are great something was trying to make an attachment. When we got home my mothers back was red and had a scratch on it. This was the most activity we’ve ever gotten for we were the only ones on the tour at the time. When I was in the attic I saw a panting of a woman both me and my mom thought she looked familiar? But just a few days ago I went to an old vintage antique store that was also haunted and we saw the same painting there. Then my mother starting feeling the same pain she did when she went to van horn. I later felt pain on my back. I honestly absolutely love this place and I hope to come back more.
Very nice place, a little small for the baby shower I just went to there. Actually really small for that. But I love it otherwise.
The Candle light tour was amazing and an overall really fun experience. Well worth the price of admission
Awesome tour done through Beyond Ghosts, gave a wonderful trip through the mansion. So many treasures hidden in this property!
We had fun on our haunted tour. It’s great to see the Historical Society keeping history alive in a fun way to help support the costs of keeping this wonderful house in tip top condition.
My best friends wedding got some pretty pics.
