Judge Rood sentances people with severe disabilities and minimal criminal history who have voluntarily undergone extensive treatment with positive results to probation for petty misdemeanors when strong evidence has suggested for years now that probation is a counter effective alternative to treatment. In my opinion, Judge Rood is out of touch with modern approaches to effective rehabilitation methods and should not be in a position to make life altering decisions over individuals who end up in the outdated rural justice system of Wisconsin. Numerous studies has proven that Probation has had a negative impact on people in the justice system and has been proven time and time again by numerous studies readily available to the public by a simple web search. It is obvious that Judge Rood would rather further complicate a person's life with multiple extensive disabilities than try to do the right thing and be helpful in their darkest hour.
A "0 star" choice would've been more appropriate. "Whatsoever you do to the least of My brothers, that you do unto Me." To an observer it appears the philosophy of the Vernon County legal system, from the top down, is to simply put those who dare to "misbehave" into the legal system and let the cards fall where they may. They are out of touch not only with Christianity but the realities of life in general. Prior posted reviews reflect the quality of justice given here. La Crosse County understands the harm this does and its officers now receive training to recognize when community mental health staff should be included for calls indicating their assistance may be needed. No increased taxes. All it required was a willingness to treat people fairly and humanely and a reallocation of some funds. So far it appears to be working, it gives officers a break while being assisted by those better trained to deal with particular issues while giving citizens help when they may need it most. Knowing local law enforcement tries to give better service with increased understanding means a lot when voting time comes around. If society can't or refuses to provide decent, affordable mental health care your justice system should at the very least have mandatory training not just for police officers but your entire legal system. How can they give you their best service without the ability to recognize an emotional problem and show a little empathy when life overwhelms someone death, disability, health issues, etc? Not everyone is a common criminal and should not be treated as such. Even a properly done pre-sentence investigation should provide some kind of justice. Any one of us could suddenly find ourselves in the legal system. Too many people with disabilities are just dumped into the system with no concern for legality or their rights. Taken to jail, talked into a plea of guilty and then given a sentence that is often neither appropriate nor humane. Those on disability typically have incomes significantly below the poverty level. They are unable to afford any kind of lawyer. If anything they'll have a public defender, who likely isn't an actual lawyer. Sad. Very sad. It's a good thing Darcy Rood is providing an opportunity to elect someone who will initiate a change for the better in Vernon County. Vote wisely!
I was assaulted when I was 19 and had my possessions broken and was told by the court id be reimbursed by him doing community service 4 years later i have seen nothing and ive called many time over the last few years. This court house is a joke and not at all somewhere youd expect justice to be done. Them not paying me what was ordered by the court is illegal.
As a historic courthouses, its among the best in the State. Make sure and visit the large main court room on the 2nd floor with the murals. Very interesting.
