After moving to Florida 8 years ago to care for my elderly mother, she really began to decline a few months ago. I was in the medical field in a few capacities and her sole caregiver. I promised her and myself she would never go into any facility. When she really took a turn for the worse recently, it became apparent that I could no longer manage her care alone. Her concierge doctor and I agreed that it was time for hospice. There were basically two choices where I live, and I decided on Vitas for a variety of reasons. I won't go into them here, nor will I mention how reluctant I was to use hospice in the first place because of my past experiences as a paramedic. All I can say is, how grateful I am that I did. Vitas home care was excellent from beginning to the end. There was an initial hitch getting it activated, but that was on the end of my doctor because he had an incorrect fax number. As soon as they received the referral, I received a call and got an intake nurse visit from Carrie, who spent hours with me. Representing team 303, the nurses after almost all were the most caring, attentive, knowledgeable and friendly I could have possibly had. My mom was put on crisis care very quickly, so she had 24-hour care almost right away. It can be confusing for a dementia patient and overwhelming for family, but they do everything to minimize your anxiety. The daily nurses constantly check in with family and there is a head nurse that comes in also to check in. And there is a nurse manager overseeing everything. At first, I wanted none of the offered services, but I was grateful I was convinced to use them. I saw an amazing chaplain non-sectarian, who also spent hours with me; the social worker who was wonderful and came twice. Even the person delivering equipment was caring. They have a 24-hour number, which I used. The nurse there talked me off the ledge, and the person who answered the phone was great. Finally, Dr. Grenn came multiple times to see my mom and had to make educated guesses at what was wrong because she refused all hospital visits, which I upheld as per her written desire. I am sure, though he was correct. So, at 96, she had a comfortable death at home with me next to her. It was a blessing, one which everyone should have. Special love to: Carrie-intake Shelby 24-hour RN Dasani-delivery Shirley-agency RN we saw the most Lorna-RN Rachel-social worker Rachel-chaplain Gene-head RN Marie-head RN Stephanie-RN manager team 303 Dorothy-RN Elizabeth-RN Germina-RN And finally Merlande-RN who was with us for the end. You are all angels.
Healthcare for my mother was spotty at best. Poor communication with attending nurses to the point where I had to ask for at least a weekly update. During one of those updates, I was phoned and told of a problem which my mother had that required medication intervention. When I called the facility to inquire what Vitas had told me, it turned out the nurse from Vitas had given me the report on another patient and not my mother! Never knew how frequently aides were coming in and was never given a DETAILED report of my mothers status regard her cancer diagnosis. Having extra eyes on my mother was the reason I engaged this company- to provide individualized care as her needs increased. Easy initiating this company in one day however, much more difficult to discontinue as I had to make numerous calls to stop service which took a week. I’m constantly checking on my mother to make sure she has what she needs. Vitas ordered supplies to the point where I thought it was wasteful and excessive. The closet was completely full however, two days after I discontinued service with this company, my mothers closet was empty of supplies! Very disappointing as this company is supposed to assist families when they are most vulnerable. Never again…
If it were possible to give 10 stars, we would. VITAS and our VITAS team took one of the most painful experiences a family could go through, and made it an environment of compassion and caring. After losing my Mom mearly four months prior, we were not only raw, but our previous hospice experience with Trustbridge was quite traumatizing. The hospice nurse was callous and outright cruel. Sharing our Dad's transition with VITAS was like a night and day experience. I can't even begin to tell you how supported and comforted my family felt by the VITAS team from start to finish. They took the most painful experience and took care of EVERYTHING so the only thing we had to focus on was loving our Dad through his transition and beyond. Carrie our Admin/RN was so kind and compassionate. She literally held me up during the intake process. The night shift nurse Yvonne was an angel. She was confident, respectful of Dad and so very caring. This gave us such strength, it's hard to express. LaRonda, the respiratory therapist was so lovely and helpful, as was Joshua the day RN who was there with us when Dad passed. Without any need to question a thing, every moment was a blessing. We were surrounded by a team of angels who stood strong us so we could give our whole hearts to Dad. When the Chaplain Theresa came to our home after Dad had transitioned, she was such a steady source of comfort to all of us. She stayed for hours and offered not only a bedside service, but counseling as we struggled with our grief. She also made all the difficult phone calls to the funeral home to let them know Dad had passed, so we didn't have to--what a tremendous gift. She also offered to do the memorial service the following Friday--all included with VITAS services! I am humbled by the grace of this company. When we lost our Mom, we were so very lost. This experience changed our minds about Hospice and how it should be done. Thank you from my entire family. You are a gift.
Vitas hospice nurses failed to show up multiple times when scheduled. Could not deliver on the amount of care they promised and the people on the phone didn't seem to have a clue. When you have someone that is bed-ridden and the extra care is needed, this is not only completely unacceptable but unconscionable. I'm sure their nurses would be wonderful if they ever showed up, but I wouldn't really know since they never did. They are completely unreliable. Stay away! UPDATE: A day after posting this, vitas finally did much of what they initially promised, but not without incident. The nurses they sent over were all helpful and caring. The home health aides were less helpful. The night in the middle of my dad’s hospice when they couldn’t promise getting us someone was nearly as bad as the failure to show up on the first day when we were met by a team leader on the telephone that was both dishonest and patronizing. We appreciate that once they understood the impact of their actions and inactions that they wanted and tried to make things better, but the fact that they made a difficult time more stressful in the first place not once but twice is what will stay with me.
I wish it would let me put 0 STARS on this it doesnt even deserve 1 star based on what happened… When my aunt was in the actual facility she was well taken care of. She was able to go home and get care from there, The RN who was there, ‼Claudia Pieror‼ did not take care of my aunt the way she should of been. Sadly she has passed away, During this time which was YESTERDAY! This “ RN “ that was supposed to be there until next shift came in. She left the home refused to come back and fought with my family over the phone about coming back to sign a paper that NEEDED to be signed for my aunt to be taken away and get proper treatment afterwards. Im very disappointed and upset about this situation and how my family was treated during a time like this. That Lady does not deserve her license and should be taken away! I am very disappointed..
Vitas provided next to no nursing support for my family friend who was determined to be imminent yesterday. This agency did not get his comfort medications in the home until today, even though family was told the medications were ordered on 9/3. The comfort medications were being shipped from Pennsylvania and did not arrive until today, 9/15, about 8 hours prior to his death. Family called for a nurse to come to the home due to his severe agitation and sharp decline in condition. A nurse came to the home on 9/14 and after his sister, who is a hospice social worker, stated that she felt her brother was pre-imminent and possibly transitioning to imminent status, based on his signs and symptoms, the nurse returned and said the loved one was indeed imminent. Still, no medications to ensure that the patient would be comfortable. He was severely agitated, having very shallow breathing and exhibited all signs of approaching death but yet no nurse came when called. Family called your office again after hours when no nurse came, after being told that a nurse would be coming today, and was told a nurse would come. Family called back to report that their loved one had now died- still no nurse. Half an hour after family called in the loved one’s death, the LCSW called asking to speak to the now deceased loved one “because I heard he was agitated”. The sister told the social worker the patient was deceased and again asked when a nurse would be out to pronounce the patient. Well over an hour passed, no nurse arrived to pronounce the death, instead the agency sent the licensed clinical social worker. This is absolutely unacceptable. This agency neglected this patient and his family at a time where he was actively dying. This agency did not even provide the simple basics of wound dressings or oral swabs for this individual. Family purchased those items. This agency also did not adjust their visit frequency for an individual who was imminent, which is a Medicare guideline. I, as a hospice social worker, am disgusted at the lack of care and consideration this family received from Vitas Hospice in Boynton Beach. This experience is exactly why people do not trust hospice agencies. This man was allowed to die in a manner that was unacceptable. His needs were not met. The emotional needs of his family were not met. I certainly hope that the next person your agency cares for will be treated with dignity and respect and does not have to die in pain. It was absolutely unfathomable to me that I and the sister had to play the role of hospice social worker for the loved ones mother and wife since the agency did not meet the needs of the dying man. The sister was not afforded the opportunity to be a family member but instead had to put herself into her “work role” to assist, educate and advocate for her family. Shame on your staff and that of team 1632.
I don’t know what went wrong with Vitas… They were totally wonderful and professional when my dad passed two and a half years ago. Now that I asked them into my house for my mom, totally different. The left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing. Very poor communication. The doctor increases my moms morphine one day, the next day the nurse tells me she does not need continuous care.
Unfortunately you can not leave a comment with zero stars, because that is what this embarrassment of a company deserves. My grandmother was under their “care” and my mother was responsible for communication and decision making. We were FORCED to use Vitas over our preferred choice Trust Bridge because of a contract that Vitas has with my grandmothers nursing home, unbeknownst to us. The politics and lack of choice for the family aside, and despite friends who also had bad experiences with this company, our hands were tied. Since the decision was made to use Hospice, I am not sure this company could have made any more of a mess of this situation then they did. We were REPEATEDLY lied to, promised calls and updates that never came, and told about things changing that we were never told were happening in the first place. The people we did talk to seemed to have little to no clue what had happened, was happening, or needed to happen, and repeatedly gave bad and false information. To top things off, we received a call from the hospital my grandmother was at asking if we had heard from Vitas. When we informed the hospital we had not, they informed us that my grandmother had passed close to 2 hours prior. So not only were they absolutely horrific with their communication during their “process”, they could not even be bothered to make the call to inform us that our grandmother, IN THEIR “CARE”, had passed. I do not think I have ever encountered a company who failed so miserably at the one thing they are supposed to do. I will NEVER recommended Vitas to anyone, and will be sure to make everyone aware of their utter lack of competence and compassion during what is one of the most difficult times a family can endure. Vitas should be embarrassed for what they are doing to the name and reputation of Hospice.
My mother was in hospice and received great care, I find myself being a caregiver of a wonderful woman who is in Vitas hospice,, however I an very disappointed regarding there services with this family. The nurses and aid are on there phones more with personal issues, the kindness and caring my mother got was so much more then they give here. When you call you get machines. When the Aids comes it's like there on a time limit, some not so sure what to do or how to do it. I am letting the family know they deserve better care and attention then this.
I've used both TrustBridge and Vitas for my mom. While each has pluses and minuses, I prefer Vitas for two reasons: A FAR better communication, and B I really like the doctor and nurse assigned to my mom. ** Currently, my mom is not on hospice, but will likely be back on shortly. Vitas will be my choice. BTW: I am a tough critic, so 3 stars isn't bad -- there is just plenty of room for improvement.
