The motto is "Sursum ad summum," which is Latin for "Rise to the Highest." The mascot is the eagle, and the sports teams are known as "The Eagles."HistoryThe school was the third district public high school established in the city of Cincinnati, following Hughes H.S. and Woodward H.S., and was opened in September 1895 on the corner of Ashland and Burdett Avenues in Cincinnati. As a district high school, it accommodated the conventional four years (grades 9–12). It began with 20 teachers and 684 students. In 1919, Walnut Hills became a classical high school (college-preparatory school) and was expanded to accommodate six years (grades 7–12). Students were drawn from the entire city, rather than from a defined district within the city. As a classical high school, its organization was modeled on eastern college preparatory schools in general, and on Boston Latin School in particular.

Like any other school, good classes depend on good teachers. All the teachers are qualified and the majority of them are good. Very challenging program.
Year after year voted as one of the top 30 public high schools in the country. To put that in perspective, there are 1,245 public high schools in Ohio alone. It is ranked # in Ohio. It is almost a perfect balance of 46% male, 54 % female and 43% minority. All students take Latin . great sports. Beautiful historic campus. Near Xavier University.
Amazing school, however your kid has to be really smart to do well. Easy to get in even with the test, but not so easy to shine. Curriculum makes you work hard to prepare you for college. If your kid is a lackey, he/she will hate this place.
Attending this high school was an opportunity that I would not have had if I went somewhere else. The academics are hard but they help you develop good habits. I met a lot of nice people and made good friends. The school is pretty diverse, so you will be able to meet different types of people and discover different types of cultures. I enjoyed going to this high school and couldn't imagine my high school experience anywhere else.
What I have learned from Walnut: No matter which schools you are considering, always look beyond the test scores and surface images. Pros: * Because of Walnut's method of obtaining the highest scoring test takers in the district, and what has resulted from that, the Walnut name is well known for their academics, and therefore will look "good" on college applications. * Because of Walnut's high scores, the school and students are offered more readily opened doors to some scholarship and academic opportunities, which may not be as easily accessible in other schools within the district. * They have a large variety of sports and clubs * A variety of fundraising events * Lots of opportunity to be involved * A good selection of AP classes Note: The curriculum of the AP classes that are offered at this school is the same at any other school that offers that same AP class. This is true because all AP classes prepare the student for a national AP exam in that particular subject, which is standardized across all states. Some of the teachers may produce a well orchestrated class environment that is conducive to student's learning more than what is needed for the exam. Some teacher's will have little ability or desire to teach beyond the exam, and some teachers will not even teach what is required to pass the exams. This is true for all class levels, not just AP. In general, the lower the class level, the less effort you will see put forth by most teachers. This is very common in the education system, not just at Walnut, and is an important concept to understand when choosing a school so you are not swayed by appearance. * An attractive, clean campus * Convenient location * Like many schools, a select number of teachers are willing to go above and beyond the minimal requirements of their responsibilities. Walnut Hills High School is an amazing school, ranked among the top in the nation. I graduated in Spring 2014, and may I just say that the six years I spent have prepared me so much for college that it's ridiculous. Walnut isn't for the small and weak-minded, nor is it for those who are lazy and aren't willing to put in the work. If you don't try, you will not make it. However, if you're ambitious, and willing to put in the time and effort, Walnut will take you many places. College is fairly easy for me at the moment, only because of the skills I learned and harder level of work I did in high school. The work isn't going to be simple, but that shouldn't daunt one from attending. If anything, accept the challenge. Walnut is very academically competitive, and I've noted that it carries on to the future; the drive to do better than those around you JUST BECAUSE- and it's not a bad thing! The only honest drawback I can see is that there are a LOT of other students, so it may be intimidating at first for a younger student. You can get used to it, though. Should you choose to send your child to Walnut Hills, and they choose to take advantage of all of the opportunities presented to them, they will walk out successful, confident, and ready for life. P.S.- except for that Frank Tyson guy down there. Not sure where he's going to go in life with such a close-minded putting it nicely attitude. Bad apple of the bunch.
Walnut Hills is an amazing school. You would rather send you child anywhere else. However walnut is only for the strongest of kids, weak minded individuals will be quickly left behind socially and academically.
Beautiful facility with top of the line science labs, a natatorium, and outdoor athletic facilities that compete with local community colleges. You must score over 70% on your 6th grade Terra Nova to enroll.
I would like to provide a counter balance to the review by "F" below. Walnut Hills High School is a magnet school serving grades 7-12 in the Cincinnati Public School District. Admittance is based solely upon MERIT, shown by the test score for the Entrance Exam. I believe a score in the 70th percentile of the Terra Nova standardized test is required for in district students and 94% or better on an entrance exam for out of district students was required in recent years to be CONSIDERED for Walnut Hills. If students fail to perform academically, ie. 3 F grades in any classes they are required to transfer to their local Cincinnati Public School. Walnut Hills is all about Academic Excellence and providing a safe environment for those children who show aptitude, perseverance and a willingness to work hard and to excel. It is VERY COOL to be SMART at Walnut Hills. The teachers set what is a high bar for typical Jr. High and High School, but which is common place in colleges, and in similar schools of excellence in the US and around the world. They do not coddle, nor carry students, but challenge them to be their best. The Esprit de Corp of the Walnut Hills students, faculty and alumni is very strong, because they are all aiming for these high ideals. They have EXPECTATIONS for themselves and each other, and they plan to make a difference in their communities in the decades to come. Some might call this being stuck up, but this is what real CONFIDENCE looks like. If they are "chasing the almighty dollar" as "F" suggests, it is the $$$$ to fund their college experiences in the form of scholarships, grants, internships and fellowships. Walnut Hills has an unwritten mission to help their students garner the funds to attend ANY University they may wish to attend, based upon the student's capability. MIT, Yale, Harvard, Notre Dame... when you go on college campus visits, ALL OF THESE SCHOOLS KNOW ABOUT WALNUT HILLS HIGH SCHOOL. Recruiters can pick out Walnut Hills students from the crowd. Your student is immediately placed in the "A Pile" on the recruiters desk. Walnut Hills is NOT for everyone. Walnut Hills is challenging and sets a high bar; Walnut Hills required PERSONAL OWNERSHIP on the part of the student. Going to Walnut Hills is an Honor which is earned and fought for each day they are at school. Will your child study 3-4 hours each night all year long, and then get up early for 6:30AM help Sessions with their teachers before school starts? Will they work with other people of all races in a peer to peer manner, and hold themselves and others to account? Will they participate actively in class, learning from both the teacher and each other? At the end of an arduous week of exams, will they look at you exhausted and spent and say "Dad, I LOVE Walnut Hills" That is they type of future leader who will excel in this environment. If you do not believe these types of wunderkind exist in today's world, I invite you to walk the halls of Walnut Hills any school day, and you will see them in action. The teachers are allowed to teach. There are NO disruptive students, because such students are removed from the student body, These kids want to learn. 97% will go on to college. Walnut Hills is a gem in the crown of Cincinnati. Disclaimer: I am the proud parent of a Walnut Hills Senior, and another student who attended for her Junior High years at Walnut and loved her experience. I am NOT an Alumni of Walnut Hills, rather attending St Xavier High School. Both schools believe in the motto of Walnut Hills Sursum Ad Summum - "Rise to the Highest"
I personally feel this school puts way too much stress on us as student but over all it is a nice place and it's gives you great experiences. I am a student of this school and I have meet great people here
