Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge

Description

The Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge is located on the south shore of Long Island and is one of the undeveloped estuary systems on Long Island. In 1947, Maurice Wertheim donated 2000acre on eastern Long Island to the United States government; the donated land subsequently became the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge's purpose is to protect the Carmans River Estuary for migratory birds. Wertheim hosts a variety of habitats including oak-pine woodlands, grasslands, and fresh, brackish and salt water wetlands. These habitats attract and support many types of wildlife including white-tailed deer, osprey, muskrat, fox, turtles, frogs and fish. The refuge also serves as a haven for waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, and songbirds. In 2012 the Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex opened a new visitor center and headquarters facility in the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge. The building includes an interactive exhibit hall, environmental education classroom and administrative offices.PopulationThe refuge's wildlife populations are mainly diverse. There are about 300 species of birds at the refuge. The refuge winters up to 5,000 waterfowl, most of them being black ducks - a species that is declining. The coastal location also makes this refuge an excellent migration place for shorebirds, raptors and songbirds.

Hiked Black Tupelo trail to Indian Landing: fewer river views than from White Oak trail, but trail itself is quite pleasant and photogenic. Mosquitoes are not as bad as in some other preserves, still bug spray or wipes are recommended. Very nice visitor center with restrooms and dark room presenting bird songs.
It's a nice place to hike. There are a few trails you can hike on. Don't forget to enter the visitors center. There are restrooms and a small museum. They also have a store. Leave your pets and bicycles behind, as you can not take them on the trail.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entryFree

Beautiful preserve for walks. Paths are wide and mostly flat. Saw wild turkey and other wildlife. I'm sure if I go often I'll run across deer since there's hunting allowed at specified times of the year. Strictly controlled by DEC so numbers are kept in check. Great place.
This place is beautiful and amazing so many trails to walk and boy can you get a workout here lots of wildlife running free which I love lots of little nooks that you can hide away and be peaceful I really recommend this place and it's all free you don't have to pay for parking none of that and it's just so close to my house which I'm so grateful. Everyone says hello as they walk by which is very rare on LI sometimes LOL. But if you are going to go hiking around here please make sure that you bring water and food in your backpacks the bathrooms are very clean nice little visitors building to go to, this place has it all.
Superb! Another reason to Hike Long Island! Trails everywhere, the great outdoors, a wonderful no charges or fees way to get out and enjoy the change of seasons and color!
A little respite from the heat, under the tree canopies, but more flying insects than usual. The milkweed is so fragrant!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitPrice for adult entryFree
Beautiful trails and the visitor center is super nice they have a whole museum part for kids and nice bathrooms and a back patio where you can sit and birdwatch they have a bunch of feeders
A large park with two sets of trails going to different sides of the river. There is a large visitor center unfortunately still closed as of May 2021 due to COVID and public portable toilets are available outside the visitor center. The signs and trails are well-maintained despite the reduction in staffing levels.
