West Ashley Park

Description

West Ashley Park is the largest municipal park in Charleston, South Carolina. The city originally bought a 99.8-acre parcel, including a lake created from an old phosphate mine, in 1985. In 1997, a neighboring property owner, Ross Development Corp., offered to deed the city six adjoining parcels in exchange for the city's constructing a road from the Glen McConnell Parkway to the park. The estimated cost of the road was $421,100, and the appraised value of the new 161 acres being offered (a 95-acre park addition and a 66-acre wetland preserve) was $429,590.Work on the park began in 1998 after the city was permitted to remove several large trees at the site. In 1998, Anson Construction Co. was awarded a $2.3 million contract for the park's initial development. The park opened on April 8, 2000 to the public, but progress on new features at the park continued. By 2001, the park included four baseball fields and four soccer fields. Bicycle and pedestrian trails crisscrossed the property down to Church Creek. Although the public had been given access to the park as features were added, the formal opening of the park did not occur until 2001.In 2007, a disc golf course was planned, the only free course within an hour of Charleston.

If you want to hike or disc golf in a genuine swamp, subtropical environment and you’re not from around here, I definitely say you should check this place out! My only complaints are that after Hole 6 on the disc golf course it gets quite confusing. After Hole 7 the order is unintelligible and I decided to quit since I couldn’t find Hole 8 and ended up playing some unidentified hole. Also it was getting dark. Which brings me to the next point that the hours are very unclear as well. Signs say that it’s dawn to dusk, yet Google says it closes at 8 PM and people were still at the park with their cars at dusk. Still, I didn’t want to risk getting locked in there it does say they lock the gates since you have to call the cops to get out, though the police station is literally right next door so it probably wouldn’t take long… I wouldn’t risk a fine or something for bad hours and unclear labeling though. Even in December there seem to be gnats and mosquitos… but I certainly won’t complain about swamp conditions in a disc golf course called “Fire Swamp”! The course and area is honestly gorgeous, it’s just very oppressive humidity so you might want to bring bug spray and be prepared to get worn out even in winter months. Again, if you’re not from around here, Charleston is a 9a climate zone and so it’s even more subtropical than other areas of South Carolina or even Georgia for that matter… it’s a must-see if you like wetlands!
Cute park with loads of fields and bathroom facilities. Romeo says "Thanks for the walking trails!" Playground: Small but cute playground with swings and a jungle gym. Restrooms: At least two pavilions with restrooms that were open even when there were no games on the field. Dog-friendliness: There are walking trails through the woods that are easy for most people and dogs. A few animal-proof trash cans around to throw out poop bags. Dogs aren't allowed on the fields. Picnic area: Picnic tables and metal charcoal grills are all the way in the back.
I've been to this park many times but today was my first time hiking the trails. It was a great hike around the this little island. There is fishing and boating access. I was able to take really nice pictures with me and my children. I love that it's tucked away but there's not many signs indicating where the trails are located. There are also 2 playgrounds and fields for organized sports.
Tonight was the make up game for one of last week's rained out all star games, and it was disappointing, to say the least. West Ashley was playing against a North Charleston team, and I believe, if the officiating was indeed unbiased, we would have won. Now, I don't blame the ref, I blame the management of the park, for hiring incompetent ref's. We can't blame a referee who has not been formally trained and unable to call obvious handballs or tripping, but I do expect our City parks and recreation team to hire the best of the best, if nothing else, but for our all star players. Totally disappointed in our Parks and Recreation group in charge of West Ashley Park, maybe they need to realize that we, the tax payers, are ultimately your bosses... just saying. I would like for an upper management member to contact me in regards to this review, I am standing by. Best regards, Chad Beckmann.
Great place if you enjoy getting locked in and waiting 30 minutes for cops to come to unlock the gate but they never show up so you have to walk to the police department up the road to get an officer to unlock the gate so you and your boyfriend and 3 other families can leave the godforsaken place!
There aren't many great parks in West Ashley. I really enjoy this one! There are tons of ball fields, hiking paths, picnic tables, restrooms, and even a fishing dock in the very back with a bridge that leads to an island. As a full time professional photographer, I occasionally have clients that don't want to fight the traffic to get downtown or out to the beach for a photo shoot. This park makes for a nice location for them.
This is a huge park with soccer fields, ponds and trails. There is some paved and some more in the trees with smaller trails, whatever your fancy I think most would find it relaxing and makes for a good walk or ride with your bike. Lots of parking spaces, so I don’t think that would be an issue.
Great park! Good feel of the nature, kids playgrounds, and some little hikes without having to pay a park fee like some others.
A cute little park. Theres a few picnic tables at the end over looking the water, a great little place for lunch
Lots of parking, clean bathrooms, and playground is fun for the children!
