The hour limitations are an extreme disservice to students who are economically disadvantaged. I am struggling to access their services as an older student. When I was a Freshman, I would have had to drop out. I am very sad to see this shift without any assistance for students who may need the library access. If students are paying for it, they should have adequate access. Otherwise, payment should be optional. These hours do not accommodate working students whatsoever. What do you do for a student with a full schedule that also works during business hours? This group of students tend to need library services the most. While I am sure it is not intentional, many students who are struggling economically at Winthrop are citing this issue, along with several others, as evidence that the institution is completely disregarding their students from the lower class. I understand that staffing is difficult, but there should be an offering for one late night at the library for the students that need it. Also, the Google hours oftentimes claim that Dacus Library is open when the building is closed.
Good place to come in and get some work done, or if you need to print things, they offer printing services to students. They're also doing a good job at taking Covid precautions and have it set up where you order books you need ahead of time.
24 hour library access!! Except on weekends, we'll just open whenever!! And also the 24 hours is only for one floo!! The top and bottom floors close and midnight even though the bottom floor has the music lab with software only available on campus there, but who cares about the music kids and their education, right? Other than that, staff kind of knows what they're doing, but not always. Depends on whether you get a work-study kid or not. I was went on a wild goose chase looking for things in the complete wrong place countless times when I asked for help.
This is a place where time does not exist. Enter and you may never leave. You become easily trapped between the shelves on the first and third floors. Some people manage to escape. Others get trapped and have to call the mythical WuPo to be released. Enter at your own risk. PS. The staff are nice and will help you do almost anything but leave.
Disappointing. I wanted to see if they had yearbooks from 1920 when my grandmother was a student, but only admit students. Apparently, their security budget was cut. College of Charleston, another state school, doesn't have the same issues; the general public can browse their collection. I left a research request, so hopefully the Dean of Libraries will get back with me and help with my research.
They don’t allow alumni to use the facilities. First we spend day and night there. Then you kick us to the curb??? Thanks I guess.
My whole life was benefitted by being able to do my work in a safe and quiet environment. School is hard enough. Dont let life interrupt your journey. Thanks Dacus.
