About Us
The Young Robertson Gallery (YRG) specializes in the visual arts of Africa and the African Diaspora. YRG offers a wide range of African fine art, including sculpture, textiles, metalwork and pottery. Our gallery’s mission is to share the detailed ethnographic knowledge gained in the field with our clientele as a means to develop their understanding of African art and culture. YRG has developed and participated in exhibitions on a range of topics for locally and internationally based museums and cultural institutions. We believe that authenticity is integral to building a successful collection, and we bring museum quality African art to our patrons.
Paulette Young, the director of the gallery, is a cultural anthropologist and an independent scholar in the creative arts of Africa and the African Diaspora. Young received her Ph.D. from Columbia University. Her research focused on women, concepts of beauty and the fine arts of Africa and the Diaspora. Eric Robertson, the gallery’s advisor, is known internationally for his extensive knowledge of African art. Robertson is a frequent lecturer and consultant on African art and its influence on modern artists, including African American artists. With over 35 years of experience in the field of African art, Robertson has been the senior vettor for authenticity at many international tribal art shows. He has served as an advisor to several cultural institutions, universities, and private collectors. Robertson has also placed objects in galleries and museums in North America, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean. Together, Young and Robertson have worked to establish the gallery as a site for understanding the importance of African art and culture, both within a historical and contemporary context.
YRG is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 6pm by appointment. Please contact the gallery at [email protected] or 212.675.4045 to arrange a personal tour of the collection.
