The 110 acre 3-B Photography Ranch and Texas Photography Museum is located between College Station and Caldwell, TX.
3-B Ranch was started in 1970 when Jim and Ellen Box, purchased the first 40 acres outside of Caldwell, TX. For years, Jim had wanted a hobby farm/ranch where he could have a few cows, a horse and bring the family up for weekend outings. , Doug, Kandace and Allyson, along with their two grandfathers they began improving this raw land. They began clearing it with a brush hook and chain saw. Using a two man, hand held post hole digger they ran the first row of barbed wire fence to enclose the land. Without electricity, running water or even a generator, they began building the first cabin. “We were truly Off Grid,” Doug always said! “We washed up in a rain collection barrel and cooled off in small muddy pond.
Doug always enjoyed making photos at the ranch and building small blinds to allow him to get closer to the wildlife. He even did some portraits on location at the ranch.
1979 he moved to Brenham, his wife’s home-town. He bought a DayCare Center and did photography on the side. In 1994, Doug moved his home and photography studio to the farm. He was hired by the Texas Professional Photographers Assoc to be Executive Director of the association. It was at this time that Doug began teaching photography around the country, then around the world. He wrote six books on photography and in 2004 he started Texas Photographic Workshops teaching classes at his studio on the ranch. It was in that year that the idea for the 3-B Photography Ranch was born.
Doug has been a professional photographer for the past forty five years, and has taught classes and worked one-on-one with photographers in all 50 states in the USA and six countries and he has written six books on photography.
