18 Jorissen Street Ladies' Residence

18 Jorissen carries the warmth of a home, the cleanliness of the facilities, rooms and beds is everything. The home has a really great management system with a very friendly staff. The communal areas are spacious just as how the rooms are, the bathrooms and showers scream 5 star. Safety and convinience are guaranteed as it being a minute away from the Wits campus really works best, and surrounded by shops and other institutions.

My cousin stayed here during the course of her studies at Wits. She said the place is always clean and very secure. The accommodation is right across the street from the Wits campus. Just an amazing accommodation for ladies!

Never been so disappointed. The service there is really poor. The staff is really good and tries to make the place really bearable. But unfortunately their efforts go unnoticed. Maintenance issues goes for months unfixed. A lot of things don't work and when Wits inspectors come to inspect, they remove the "Out of Service" signs and make it look like the place is perfect but it is in fact horrrible. Whatever issue a tenant raises just falls on deaf ears. If you are a first year student it is not a proper place to go as your first res experience. Hopefully it does better so long as it is still NSFaS and Wits Accredited.

It's a wonderful place. The rooms have great lighting, there's no problems with the wifi and who doesn't love great sisterhood. Would recommend it 100 percent!!

• Untidy toilets and communal showers. • House mother is unprofessional and does not communicate with tenants. • Landlord spends more money on decor mural and stone paving, social gatherings & promotional shirts rather than essentials needed on the premises. • Communal fridges always have rotting food. • There is a theft problem that is never addressed by the landlord nor house mother. • WiFi is always lagging. • Contract states that tenants will be notified 2 days prior about room inspections, instead, they are done unannounced. • Students can be locked out in the early hours of the morning or late hours of the night because security guard is not present at the door. Thus, endangering the lives of the students. • Electricity issues that are never related to loadshedding & there is no backup power such as an inverter or generator. • Can go 2 - 3 days without water and 18J will be the only res in the area affected by this. • Untidy communal kitchens. • Renovations are done during the academic year, so all the noise makes it impossible to study peacefully. • Viewings for potential tenants are done while there are still paying tenants occupying the room. Paying tenants are not notified of these viewings.

The communal spaces have no cameras and your things get stolen. They do renovation during the academic year irregardless if it's exam period and imagine the noise. The Wi-Fi is bad and they will tell you to top up R100 for it to be upgraded. There were days whereby we didn't have water, and electricity and nothing was done about the water issue. We had to go write exams without bathing as it was exam period. They want a first month's rent on NSFAS funded students upfront and give excuses when NSFAS pays and they have to repay you, they'll be like "the money hasn't reflected in our account." The money be reflecting in your statement and for them it will take like a month for them to see the money in their account. And the landlord blocks you when you are communicating your complaints straight to her when you feel like the house mother has taken quite some time responding to your complaints or you didn't receive a suitable response. There also were rats in the basement where the main kitchen is at. We also have never had a pest control in the building. Complaints about the building are endless yhoo.

Great Res, the staff are welcoming and it's closer to campus. I highly recommend this res

An awesome space for young girls to stay while studying. Newly renovated, super safe and right across the road from Wits University. Rooms are a nice size, have awesome views and can be decorated to your choice and taste for the duration of your stay. Lovely communal kitchen opens up to a large, private courtyard with laundry and full wifi. If you're looking for a safe "study res", thus is the place to check out
