Art in the Yard was born from a number of serendipitous moments and meetings of artists and space. The gallerist Georgia Eccles Schoeman started her first art business in 2002, exporting collections of South African art by established and immerging artists to the UK. There the works were exhibited at pop up exhibitions organized by Georgia across London, art fairs and also at other galleries, notably Stephanie Hoppen Gallery, Walton Street, London a relationship that still exists today. That business turned into an agency representing several Cape Town based artists due to the difficulties of traveling back and forth to London. The Art world took a little back seat for a few years while Georgia concentrated on a fashion retail store called Indian Summer which brought her to Franschhoek. She always was on the look -out for a space to start her own gallery, and after a few years the timing was right, its present premises became available and this inspired Georgia to connect with her old art connections and a few new artists and Art in the yard was born.
