Augrabies Falls National Park

Description

Augrabies Falls National Park is a national park located around the Augrabies Falls, about 120 km west of Upington in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa. It was established in 1966.The Augrabies Falls National Park covers an area of 820 km² and stretches along the Orange River. The area is very arid. The waterfall is about 60 metres high and is awe-inspiring when the river is in flood. The gorge below the falls averages about 240 m deep and runs for 18 kilometres. The gorge provides an impressive example of erosion into a granitic basement. The original Khoikhoi people named the waterfall Ankoerebis, meaning the "place of big noises". The Trekboers who later settled in the area derived the name Augrabies. The name is sometimes spelt Aughrabies. There are many deposits of alluvial diamonds along the Orange River and legend has it that the biggest cache of diamonds in the world lies in the swirl-hole eroded into the granite at the foot of the waterfall by the thundering waters. The most characteristic plant in the park is the giant aloe (Aloe dichotoma) known locally as the quiver tree or kokerboom. It is perfectly adapted to the dry semi-desert rocky areas found in the Nama-Karoo, able to withstand the extreme temperatures and the infertile soil. This tree, which grows up to five metres high, gets its name from the fact that the Bushmen (San) used the soft branches to make quivers for their arrows. The eye-catching silhouette of the quiver tree is typical of this part of Northern Cape landscape. When the tree flowers in the winter flocks of birds are attracted to their copious nectar, and baboons can be seen tearing the flowers apart to get the sweet liquor.

We loved staying here. The waterfalls were amazing. The camping site is only gravel you not allowed onto the grass which is a shame. The bathrooms were clean and well looked after. We did 2 hikes and had a great time. We also had coffee in the restaurant which was the best ever.
Hot as hell but the experience of a lifetime! There was quite a queue when we arrived but it moved quickly and efficiently. It's not often that you get to see the falls in all its splendour, it's awesome to see. The park and facilities are excellent, the walkways allow easy access to the falls. Visit the upper viewing decks first and then the lower decks to cool off in the spray. Prepare yourself to get soaked don't wear a white shirt
The campsite is great. It has all the amenities you need and there is sufficient shaded spots for tents, campers or caravans. Camp sites is first come first serve basis and a suggestion would be to take a ground sheet with as the sites is all sand. Walkway and viewing points at the waterfall is safe, well maintained and greatly positioned. There were some walkways damaged during the last flood, but they were closed out properly. The park provides fuel, gift shop and a restaurant.
The park personnel are very friendly and helpful. Especially now that the falls were running at 3500 cms and there was a element of danger. They had helpers posted at various points of possible danger to help everyone and they were very quick to help which shows them were very attentive. The falls were amazing and must see.
Very neat accommodation and professional staff. We came in an hour after closing and they waited for us. You find a lot of little insects flying around because of the recent rain, but the staff have it covered, buy your face net in the shop. The roads and walkways are very well maintained. I highly recommend this place. Restrooms: Very neat and fresh.
Plan this visit to coincide with good rains it is really majestic. Take the whole day, walk down river, stop at the different viewing points. Then refresh yourself at their restaurant then off you go on your own game drive. This is another heritage site that they are doing an AWESOME job of protecting. Toilets and general area are well kept and clean I do believe you can camp there. It is simply refreshing
As an arid national park, this place is super unique. The accomodation options are many and the campsite is really great. There are few self-drive options around the park to take in the scenery and animals. The viewing decks are spectacular and it is a beautiful place to enjoy and relax in. The little shop has all the essentials ice, wood, snacks etc and staff are all friendly and helpful. There is a restaurant too which serves a wide range of food options.
A nice scenic walk alongside the falls. Suggested to visit in January when the waters are more raging in order to experience the "spray" of the fall. A great spot for a great breakfast. The gift shop has many intriguing local gifts & great prices.
Beautiful awesome great . I've traveled from Bloemfontein just to see this amazing place. It's crazy how they maintain this place so well. It's clean and friendly to children and a whole family. I am definitely visiting this place again soon. I'd like to book a weekend and try their activities because I didn't get the chance to see the whole place.
The best time to go is just after a flood, during dry seasons the falls can be very sparse but after major rainfall it is absolutely breathtaking. Hiking trails may be closed after major flooding but if you can go on the trails it is stunning as well.
