Centre for Fine Art, Animation and Design
CFAD was founded in Durban over 20 years ago by acclaimed political cartoonist, Nanda Sooben. The success of the Durban school has led to the establishment of our branch here in Pietermaritzburg. We are relatively new and still growing, and we have a dedicated team of lecturers who draw on a range of skills and experience.
Denise, our Design Studies lecturer, has several years of experience as a Graphic Design lecturer in Johannesburg. She taught as a senior lecturer at the Inscape Design College, after which she joined the AAA School of Advertising, where she became Head of Department for the Prelim Year. Prior to this she gained industry experience as a practicing designer for various ad agencies and design studios. Since returning to the Midlands she was involved teaching art to Matric level (art history and practical) at different Pietermaritzburg high schools. During this time she also taught students privately from her home studio in Scottsville.
Peter, who teaches Fine Art, is an established painter who has exhibited nationally and internationally. He has a Master’s Degree in Fine Art from the Durban University of Technology. He has over 20 years of experience as an oil painter, and it is thanks to his expertise in this medium that we are one of the few art schools in the province that still teach oil painting.
Michael teaches Digital Design, and has been working as a visual artist and designer for 19 years. His work has been featured in exhibitions at various galleries and shows including the KZNSA, Everard Read, Bell-Roberts Gallery, AVA, the Jo Burg Art Fair and Woolworths. For many years he has worked closely with the internationally renowned Durban based interdisciplinary collective Dala ‘Art Architecture for Social Change’ that collaborates regularly with international artists, designers and thinkers.
Students begin with Perceptual Studies, Drawing, Painting, Design and Advertising Techniques and then move to more complex projects. Senior students study Web Design and Full Advertising Campaigns requiring the production of Logo Designs, Brochures, Bill Boards and 3D Packaging. Animation is an integral part of the 3 diploma course.
Our mission is to be an innovative leading service provider in Fine Art, Animation, Graphic Design and Multimedia with a defined focus on meeting industry needs through a creative and integrated curriculum.
