Ditsong Tswaing Meteorite Crater

Description

DITSONG Tswaing Meteorite Crater
About 220 000 years ago a blazing stony meteorite of approximately 50m slammed into the earth’s crust. The impact formed a huge crater, 1,13 km in diameter and initially 200 m deep.

This crater, formerly known as the Pretoria Saltpan (or Zoutpan), is situated 40 km north of the Pretoria CBD and is one of the best-preserved terrestrial meteorite impact craters in the world. Tswaing also has a saline crater lake which is fed by underground springs.

The name Tswaing means Place of Salt in Setswana.

Regular visits to Tswaing by people began during Middle Stone Age, about 150 000 to 30 000 years ago. Small nomadic groups of people visited Tswaing to hunt game, gather edible and medicinal plants and to collect salt. Iron Age people lived in the proximity of the crater, 800 - 900 years ago, tending their cattle, growing crops and collecting salt from the crater floor. Evidence of early people and the salt mine which operated at Tswaing between 1912 and 1950 can still be found.

Today, Tswaing is an almost 2000-hectare conservation area with a focus on the conservation of natural and cultural heritage (mining, farming and oral histories) of the site. In local mythology it is believed that a large snake lives in the crater lake and will eat anyone who is near the lake at night. The snake stores the bones of its victims in a cave on the hillside.

Well to start off, yesterday Saterday 23 March 2022 a friend and I drove all the way out there just to be told the the place closed at 14:00 although the internet specifically stated that it only close at 16:00, so we left. The very next day Sunday 24 March 2022 we drove all the way back there again. After paying our entrance fee of R40 per person we where told to drive all the way to the picnic site! So we did, but not long after we start our gurney we got stuck in a puddle of water which was quite deep. So our morning didn't start off very good. See the photos below. When we finally got the the picnic site, we started to walk all the way down to the crater. We where told that there will be mosquitoes but this was no joke! They were in their thousands! Flying all around and biting us! So after all its needless to say we didn't enjoy the hike as much as we anticipated it to be!
DITSONG: TSWAING METEORITE CRATER Some 220 000 years ago a blazing stony meteorite the size of half a football field slammed into the earth’s crust. The impact formed a huge crater, 1.4 km in diameter and 200 m deep. This crater is one of the best-preserved meteorite impact craters in the world. The name Tswaing means Place of Salt in Setswane, and refers to a saline lake that covers the crater floor. From 1912 to 1950 an industry producing soda ash and salt was based at the crater. Major attractions, besides the crater, are an extensive wetland system, the large variety of plant species of the Sourish-Mixed Bushveld, and 240 species of birds. From the start, the Tswaing project has invited community participation in its planning and development. Local communities have already benefited from the Museum project through job creation, skills training, environmental education, income-generating projects and tourism. Know Before You Go Driving north on the R80 towards Soshanguve, turn right on Mopanie Road/M35 and then left onto Soutpan Road. The Tswaing Crater entrance will be to your left, off Soutpan Road. An entry fee grants access to secure parking and a picnic site, with the 7km return trail to the crater starting from there. A permit can be obtained at additional cost to drive up to the crater rim viewpoint to park and start a shortened hike from there.
Beautiful walk with great views. Sadly there is no museum as it burnt down years ago and hasnt been replaced, only a black shell remains.
Still closed, tried calling before driving out but their number is disconnected. Don’t bother trying to visit until long after covid. What a pity.
