GFI Art Gallery

About

Private art gallery

Description

It is fitting that the GFI ART GALLERY will now bear the name of its owners, Gutsche Family Investments. The Gutsche Family of Port Elizabeth passionately support the visual arts and maintain the Gallery in order to promote pride in the city and the arts.

The Gallery Board is chaired by Dorothea Moors, the youngest daughter of the late Philipp Rowland Gutsche, founder of Gutsche Family Investments. Mrs Moors, along with her Board, have shown huge commitment to the development of the arts in Nelson Mandela Bay. Starting out as an Aviation Gallery with the Ron Belling Military Aviation Collection, the focus has gradually shifted with the changing times and the growing interest in the visual arts arena. The Gallery Board has been a leading force in establishing NMB as a centre of the visual arts and “we look forward to the growing stature of the arts in Nelson Mandela Bay” says Mrs Moors.

The GFI ART GALLERY is about opportunity and “I am excited about the next phase of the Gallery” says Gallery Director, Robyn Sharwood, “especially youth orientated arts development and programmes that improve participation and appreciation.” We have facilitated exciting partnerships between business and arts and, going forward, the GFI ART GALLERY will continue to foster projects that benefit the community. As Mrs Moors says, “the Gallery is commercial, but with a philanthropic heart”

"The GFI Art Gallery is an Art Deco building designed by Gertruida Brinkman, the first woman Architect to graduate in SA. As well as hosting exhibitions, the Gallery houses the Ron Belling Military Aviation collection of oil paintings."

What a fabulous building and well laid out gallery. So often galleries aren't well lit, this one is, and it makes viewing so much more pleasurable. I absolutely loved the building itself and, I know this is odd but... the staircase is so well constructed that you can just glide up and down it!
The most beautiful Art Gallery I ever visited that goes above and beyond to welcome their guests. They make an effort to promote local talent and have iconic exhibitions frequently.
The GFI Gallery keeps on giving to the community of Gqeberha. The George Pemba exhibition was a resounding success.
