What a lovely private reserve! We had a fantastic tour guide for our game drive - she knows almost every big animals here Daisy the Rhino and Fabio the lion! and is quite funny! Definitely made our game drive more special and personable. The property itself is beautiful with tasteful decor and service nice bathtub, heated bed, and fireplace inside the rooms. Highly recommended!
My wife and I spent two nights and three days at Gondwana. It was the experience of a lifetime. We had two evening game drives start at 4pm and two morning game drives start at 6am. Our guide, Kelvin, was fantastic. He was incredibly knowledgeable of all the animals and the surrounding environment. He made every effort to make our drives memorable, and he succeeded. We were six feet away from lions and elephants. Saw plenty of giraffes, zebras, antelope, birds, and hippos! It was phenomenal. We stayed at the Kwena lodge and that was a great place to sleep and eat. The food was tremendous and the evening menu was different on both nights. Beer, wine, liquor, whatever you wanted was on offer, but not included in the reservation. Still, it was a very reasonable price and didn’t break the bank at all. I couldn’t recommend Gondwana enough. They put the animals first and that is a great thing. You’re going to have a once in a lifetime experience when you stay here.
Our holiday here was great. Excellent service, very polite and friendly communication with customers, they try to guess all your desires and needs. Great lodges, comfortable infrastructure, very professional guides. But the most important thing is of course nature. We were lucky to see all the animals, except for the leopard. The guide tried very hard, showed and told, supplied us with non-obvious facts and dispelled the fears of those who doubted. A wonderful place where you can spend a few nights and see nature from a distance of several meters.
Unforgettable is how I would describe our stay at Gondwana. It is really a fantastic experience. We stayed with our 1.5y old child for 3 days/2 nights and everything was perfect. The team was incredibly nice and managed to get us on a game drive with the little one, we stayed in a large villa that could accommodate 6/8 people, the food and service were great and then the game drives were remarkably good. Highly recommended!
Having attempted to visit twice previously, only for COVID lockdowns to thwart our plans, it's safe to say that my wife and I were beyond excited about finally getting to spend a few days at Gondwana. For the most part, it vastly exceeded our expectations starting with the incredible game drives. Our guide, Thato, was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely passionate about his job. In the relatively short time we were here three nights, we saw lions, cheetahs, rhinos, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, hippos and more. The animals are very well looked after and Gondwana is clearly making every effort to ensure that conservation is at the heart of what they do. Accomodations were second to none. We stayed in one of the Kwena lodges; beautifully decorated, exceptionally comfortable and ideally located near the main lodge and restaurant area. During our time here, we also made use of the spa which I'd highly recommend to any visitor. Truly, my only critique of Gondwana is the food which seems to miss as often as it hits. The waiters are very friendly and attentive, but some of the dishes suggest to me that the head chef's creativity is currently outpacing the abilities of the kitchen staff. A great example of this was the kiwi and strawberry tart that my wife had for dessert on the second night - a crust that required brute to penetrate, giving way to what could charitably be described as a mush. That being said, this was a truly awe-inspiring and humbling experience and we're already looking forward to our next visit.
Our family of 5 3 young kids stayed 4 nights at Gondwana Reserve in a 3br Fynbos Villa Its hard to put in words what an amazing experience we had here but will try to keep it short and to the point. The location and vistas from the main reception to the quality of accomodation were all done to a v high standard. As we were visiting during winter, there were touches such as electric blanket and daily restocking of firewood which were appreciated. We really had the experience of living in the midst of the nature reserve with the safety net of the main reception being a short 5min drive or a phone call away when we needed some extra fire stick matches to light the fire one evening. That being said the animals are allowed to roam freely around the villas which is the experience you are paying for so there were very sensible safety precautions such as not walking outside of the villa at night time or dusk. One morning we had a male impala enjoying his breakfast outside our front door which was stunning. We went for the Half board option which meant that breakfast and dinner were included. Exceptionally high quality which we would happily pay for at a cafe outside. The dinner menu changed every night we were there. Impressive. And not to mention a well thought out wine list which allowed us to enjoy a good sample of SA Rose, White Wines and Red Wines during our stay. For lunch we found that we were very content ordering a picnic hamper from them one day and we had a beautiful lunch in the sun on our terrace Finally to save the best for last - the Game Drives. We were allocated 1 drive per day with the half board option. Our ranger was Calvin who was an exceptional host who was attentive to all his guests including our young family. He demonstrated a real passion for conservation and was a true professional in his knowledge and approach with the animals. I count ourselves extremely lucky to have had Calvin as our ranger for each of the 4 days. The safari experience was truly memorable. We mixed it up by trying the 7am morning safari twice and the afternoon 4pm safari twice. Both have different perspectives. One real highlight of the drives were the evening sundowners which Calvin would put on for the guests at around 5-530pm. He would carefully pick a scenic and safe location, either with amazing valley vistas or animals or both ! and then he would lay out an amazing spread of snacks and beverages. This includes a fully stocked bar. I enjoyed a glass of red wine with some biltong, whilst my wife had a G&T and the kids had some kiddy refreshments and juices. All the whilst we were admiring the fact that we were in the middle of the reserve with animals zebras and antelope happily doing their own thing around us.
Great experience with a few minor downsides. Stayed with two friends and we would definitely come back. Let us elaborate a bit on the things we liked. 1. The game drives are excellent. Guides appear competent and very friendly. I would have never imagined to be so up close to essentially wild animals. 2. The villa we rented was superb. It could have easily fit 8+ people, the view and the ambiente, especially during the evening is pristine. The place was also immaculately clean. Retrospectively, we would have brought a few more drinks and snacks with us. 3. The service personnel is pronouncedly friendly, almost a bit too friendly. That was something for us to get used to. 4. The breakfast and dinner included was delicious. Alcoholic drinks were not included, but are available for adequate prices. Again, our waitress was lovely. There are certainly a few things that can be improved but all in all they don't compromise our experience much. 1. The villa we rented was meant to accommodate 6 people. Sadly only 2 liters of water were provided to us, i.e. hardly enough for one person. Staff made it clear that it would be no problem for us to call them up and ask for more water, but that must be a bit of a nuisance right? Why not provide an adequate amount of water from the outset? 2. Making use of the mountain bikes was a bit of a hassle since administration double booked them. Not a Biggie though. 3. Meal portion sizes are small. Sure thing, good things come in small packages but a gnocchi dish comprising only 4 gnocchi does not cut it. Dishes for the same price in e.g. Cape Town or any other city nearby are a lot better.
We had an absolutely fantastic experience at Gondwana! We stayed 3 nights at the Kwena lodge but we wished we could have stayed longer. The game drives with our extremely knowledgeable both about the animals and fynbos guides Hennie and Heinrich were unforgettable! The accommodation was really comfortable, with everything you might need. The whole team at Gondwana were extremely helpful and accommodating from start to finish. There is a clear focus from the team around conservation as a priority, as well as giving you the chance to see the amazing animals and vegetation. The food was delicious and caters for vegetarians as well. Also worth mentioning you may even feel like you’re being offered food almost too often, so you won’t go hungry!
My wife and I travelled to GGR from the UK as part of our honeymoon journey and stayed here for 3 nights. It was a truly magical place. The game drives were exhilarating and very informative thanks to Thato please feed this back to him. We had a pinic arranged for us by Vital? This meant that we had a lovely lunch out in within the protected area of the bush. It was amazing. This reserve really has the balance right with its schedule. The days are busy but you never feel rushed. The staff are great and the food is brilliant. We hope that the conservation effort continue to be the main driver for this reserve as at the minute, it is doing a very good job. Highly recommend place to visit. Thank you
One of the most beautiful resorts I have been to in South Africa and all thanks to the resort officials, especially Corlea our guide without you we would not have seen the beauty of the resort and the various animals. All the best
