Howick Falls

Description

Howick Falls is a waterfall in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. The waterfall is approximately 95 m in height (310 feet) and lies on the Umgeni River. The Zulu people called the falls KwaNogqaza, which means "Place of the Tall One".Identified geographical featureThe falls were most likely first seen by European explorers in the early 19th century. However the KwaZulu-Natal province has known human occupation for well over 30,000 years and it is likely that it was a well known site prior to any western influence, given the rich legend surrounding the area.Human interactionMany people have been swept over the falls, especially in the pioneer days of the province, as some settlers thought the easiest place to cross the river was just above the falls. There have been a recorded 40 deaths surrounding Howick falls with the first recorded death occurring in 1851. Most of these have been recorded as suicides but accidents and murder have also been known to happen, contributing to if not maintaining the local legendary status of the falls. In 1999, Jeb Corliss had a near-fatal BASE jump into the waterfalls where his chute opening went asymmetric and he could not avoid flying into the downpouring water.Myth & folk-loreAccording to local legend, the pool at the bottom of the falls is the residence of the Inkanyamba, a giant serpent-like creature. According to lore only sangomas can safely approach the falls and then only to offer prayers and other acts of worship to the inkanyamba, ancestral spirits and the 'Great God'.

The Falls are really beautiful and the viewing area was clean and not crowded at all. There is an information board which gives some history and fun facts regarding the Falls. Shaded trees public parking within walking distance from the Falls. Little museum which is free to enter and only asks for donations from the public. Some locals selling their art and crafts all around the viewing deck, beautiful little trinkets to take home. There is a restroom which charges R2 per entry, was neat and clean on our visit. I would recommend seeing the Falls at least once in your life.
An epic view of the waterfall. Charts with history and general information make for an interesting read. Can run a bit dry during the mid year winter and autumn months, but flows bold and beautiful at the beginning and towards the end of the year summer and spring.Wait timeNo wait
Always nice to see the falls. Viewing area was clean. Remember visits from my childhood, we used to be able to picnic on the grounds across the falls but now the road is closed off. There is a designated parking about 250m away though. Nice little local history museum nearby, entry is free and they survive on donations.
The parking close to the falls are closed and you will have to park some distance away. The area was not too dirty but there was a lot of garbage at the bottom of the falls. The arts being sold at the stalls are really nice and very well made.Visited onWeekendWait time10–30 minReservation recommendedNo
Very beautiful place ruined by lack of upkeep and establishment of a squatter town right next to the falls. The walkway, parking and general area around the falls are neglected, vandalised and dirty. Such a shame for such a beautiful and very important historic site within our country. I will go back and share this place with friends but it is still a terrible shame that its beauty is marred by locals doing washing in the river just above the falls.
We popped into the museum aswell as went to view the Waterfall! Everything was clean, neat. All the street vendors are friendly with the most amazing art available! Got some beautiful souvenirs and then photos by the waterfall! Love this place!
A nice convenient stop from the Drakensberg to Durban. The fall is large and majestic. I've only ever visited once before and it was beautiful as the last time. Be sure to make a quick stop at the museum located about 50 meters from the Fall. It is free and covid protocols are in place. Donations are welcome for the upkeep of the museum.
I was very impressed how the whole public area has been cleaned and cleared. They have now blocked off the main drive into the parking to prevent too many people in the area, which is actually good. The falls itself was flowing amazingly with all the rains and was beautiful
Impressive falls with easy access and great view. Unfortunately the area is run down, there's no maintenance and there's trash everywhere. Parking is limited and the toilet facilities are dreadful. The shops and vendors are nice but they are limited too. Enjoy the view but not much else.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
The Waterfall is impressive since it is free to visit. Breathtaking during the rainy season. The viewing deck is well done and in great condition. Great photo opps around the deck and sitting area. I strongly recommend a detour from the N3 whether you going south to Durban or north to Jhb. Takes 7-10 minutes to reach the waterfall from N3 and you can spend any amount of time you want. There is also a museum if you have time to kill. There is also some markets/stalls by locals where you can buy some bead works, art works, and a range of other souvenirs. I just didn't like that there isn't an official parking area anymore. But there is a place to park and then you walk to the waterfall. Then you have to give the boys some coins as they claim that they were guarding your car when you were at the waterfall.
