Exploring our environment, exploring our heritage
An initiative serving to engage urban youth of colour in birding and other citizen science activity in order to increase nature awareness and exposure to career possibilities in conservation, as well as to inform young people about their own cultural narratives and traditions surrounding birds.
Iintaka Zethu serves to increase educational content through the creation of bird clubs and curricular material at schools and youth societies in South Africa.
Our goals include:
• Exposing more youth to birding
• Increasing the ethnic diversity of birders in Africa
• Educating disadvantaged youth about careers in conservation, environmental education, and eco-tourism
• Reviving indigenous cultural heritages around birds
• Cultivating a new generation of urban citizen scientists
• Preserving urban wildlife hotspots
