Jeffreys Bay is situated in the Eastern Cape Province, about an hours drive southwest from Port Elizabeth. Once a sleepy fishing and surfing town, Jeffreys Bay is now dubbed as one of the fastest growing towns in South Africa. But despite the influx of people trying to escape the concrete jungles of the larger cities, this town still retains its unique surfer element, epitomized in the relaxed, friendly atmosphere deep-rooted in the locals.
Jeffreys Bay is one of the top surfing locations in the world, and produces a consistent swell and wave formation that delights any surfer. The long, and often predictable tubes have made Supertubes beach the location of the world-famous Billabong Pro surf contest, which takes place annually in July. Apart from Supertubes, there are numerous surf spots where one can safely ride up to 3m waves. These include Kitchen Windows, Magnatubes, Boneyards, Phantoms and the Albatross.
Jeffreys Bay is also a popular vacation destination, and over the Festive season in December an estimated 150 000 visitors, both local and international, descend upon the town for their share of golden beach sand, sunshine and holiday festivities. It is not surprising then, that the town is changing at a rampant pace, with the construction of more and more low-rise holiday and beach-front apartments, large malls and lifestyle-complexes. All this is necessary to accommodate the growing number of people who are choosing this idyllic town in which to realize their dreams.
