Johannesburg Art Gallery

About

JAG is home to the largest art collection in Africa. We pride ourselves on remaining relevant and contemporary, alongside our collection.

Description

The Johannesburg Art Gallery, often referred to as JAG, is located in the centre of Joubert Park in the heart of the business district of Johannesburg. The biggest gallery on the sub-continent, JAG boasts over 9,000 works of art, displayed in 15 exhibition halls and sculpture gardens. In fact, only 10% of the exhibits are ever on display at one time, the rest are kept in storage. The exhibits range from artefacts, sculptures, drawings, paintings, prints and lacework. It is also home to 17th-century Dutch paintings, 18- and 19th-century British and European work as well as 19th-century and contemporary South African art.

The beautiful building itself was designed by Edward Lutyens, the British architect also responsible for the Anglo-Boer War Memorial.

The original collection was housed at University of the Witwatersrand prior to the gallery being built in 1915 just after the start of the First World War.

Tours are available but bookings must be made in advance.
Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Gerard Sekoto, Walter Battiss, Rodin, Henry Moore, William Kentridge and Sydney Kumalo are just a few of the acclaimed local and international artists whose work is exhibited at the Johannesburg Art Gallery.

The gallery, situated in the heart of Johannesburg’s central business district, on the edge of Joubert Park, has an extensive collection that spans 15 exhibition halls and collections ranging from 15th-century Europe to contemporary African art.

The grand building may be somewhat overlooked in the hustle and bustle of downtown Johannesburg, but don’t let that deter you. Once you navigate the one-way streets and hooting taxis, you will be rewarded with a gallery that houses one of the largest collections of art in Africa. The collection is so extensive that, at any one time, the gallery is only able to exhibit 10% of its works – and the collection continues to grow, thanks to sponsorship from Anglo American and the City of Johannesburg.

The collection that formed the basis for the gallery as we know it today was first opened to the public in 1910 and was exhibited at the University of the Witwatersrand while the building was being constructed. The purpose-built art gallery was eventually opened in 1915, shortly after World War I began.

The gallery was extended in the 1940s, with east and west wings being added. Then, in 1986, the north facade was added.

The gallery building was designed by Edward Lutyens and the first collection was put together by Sir Hugh Lane. Lane initially exhibited the collection in London and then transferred it to South Africa. The collection was added to by Lady Florence Phillips and her mining magnate husband, Lionel Phillips.

Worth a visit but be warned! Beautiful old building turning into a ruin. Current exhibition "Waiting for Gebane" is a solo exhibition by the South African artist Senzeni Mthwakazi Marasela. Excellent exhibition. It has been hastily displayed as evidenced by slap dash painting over light switches and the spatters on the floor in an attempt to freshen up the space. However, the feeling of neglect is overwhelming and clearly the staff are demoralised:no-one can even be bothered to sweep the courtyard or water the potplants, it seems. Are there no " Friends of..." organisations to help this poor heritage building and valuable space? The slides of the African Artists collection are lying in dust under the stairs. The area surrounding the gallery is a slum. Park your car elsewhere and uber in. Why go there? Entrance is free, there is a worthy collection of SA artists on the matric syllabus and the elegant bones of the building are simply magnificent. Like the Arctic, it is subsiding into non-existence and you may want to say, " I went there once."
Hidden gem in the city. Beautiful architecture and the archive is full of amazing pieces. The only shame is the location as getting there is a bit of a hassle. It needs more government funding.
Infrastructure needs to be taken care of immediately. Many Large sections of the gallery are now closed, and the gallery as a whole is becoming dilapidated. There seems to be little to no maintenance of the buildings, or control of visitors. The art there is certainly worthwhile however. Especially the local sections.
The Johannesburg Art Gallery is an art gallery in Joubert Park in the central business district of Johannesburg, South Africa. It is the largest gallery on the continent. As a major focus of urban regeneration programmes, the gallery provides the base for the Joubert Park Public Art Project and is developing links with awareness groups and community centres based in the surrounding urban area. You need to be extra careful and safe around this area as it’s within a very busy and crowded place, be extra careful with your belongings and gadgets.
This gorgeous gallery made me sad. You can see that it once was iconic, but it's clearly no longer the case. Sad how such a beautiful gem lies in the heart of the city, in a part that is one of the busiest, but remains empty and cold. Looking forward to seeing what the new management revives it.
Entrance is free to JAG I gave it 4 stars only because of the location, alas the neighborhood can be much nicer, and the gallery can stand to have bit more pieces but that in no way means that it is not a place worth visiting for anybody who appreciates art, even a noob like me. Contains several collections, gift shop and small art corner for kids. Those are some of the pieces displayed there A definite recommendation!
Wonderful quiet museum. Had a lovely time here. Get a taxi right to the front door if you are not sure where to go. The entrance is to the right side and just buzz the door to be let in. Full of great work. The area is really busy and exciting.
The gallery is currently showing "The Art of Comics" featuring a historic and contemporary look at the work of artists from South Africa, the broader continent, France, Reunion island and more. There's also a wonderful Virtual Reality animation of the Rivonia Trial were Walter Sisulu and Nelson Mandela were sentence to life imprisonment on Robben Island. The exhibition is on until 18 November 2019 and is definitely worth checking out as an adult. Kids optional . Beyond the exhibition, this is one of my favourite places in Jozi. I used to work as an accountant not far from here and, used to come eat my lunch in the gallery courtyard. It's a creative oasis within a neighbourhood that's emblematic of some the country's challenges.
The gallery has different pieces illustrating different artists. The only problem is the maintenance as when we were there it was raining and there was water coming from the ceiling in different areas of the gallery
Great place very big and spacious with great arty pieces on display, very organized and the best thing of all it's that it's open on Sundays and entrance is free
